No extra pizza this summer in Port Albert

A hopeful pizza vendor
won't be getting their piece
of the pie this summer.
At its March 15 meeting
Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh council voted
against allowing the opera-
tion of a wood fired pizza
trailer in Port Albert.
Vending from vehicles is
allowed in ACW but only if
council and the Health
Unit have given permis-
sion but it's been eight
years since one was per-
mitted to operate in the
area.
A chip wagon was in the
area in 2008, which dis-
turbed the residents in the
area because it was open

Huron -Kinloss completes three-year wayfinding sign project
Darryl Coote
Reporter
After more than three
years a project to install way -
finding signs in the Town-
ship of Huron -Kinloss' three
major communities was
completed this February
with the erection of the final
signs in Lucknow.
Wayfinding signs are
direction signs that indicate,
with arrows, the attractions
of a given location.
"[Huron -Kinloss council
was] very supportive of this pro-
ject because it's a way to high-
light our points of interest and
our attractions, and we're hop-
ing that people driving through
our community might find
something new," said Taralyn
Cronin, the township's business
and economic officer
Starting in 2013, in partner-
ship with Regional Tourism
Organization 7 that works in
Bruce, Grey and Simcoe Coun-
ties, Huron -Kinloss' town of
Ripley was the first to benefit
from this marketing campaign
with the installation of 13 way -
finding signs, pedestrian maps
and trail signs.
In 2015, a total 23 directional,
trail and gateway signs as well
as two pedestrian maps were
installed in Point Clark
According to a report, the
signs were thought necessary
in Point Clark as it is a popular
tourist destination and coun-
cil had been told its streets
were confusing to navigate.
"With the re -opening of the
Point Clark Lighthouse [last
June], which sees thousands of
visitors each year, the township
felt it was important to install
directional signage to ensure
that visitors could easily find
this attraction and the many
other points of interest in Point
Clark," the report read.
The three pedestrian maps
were deemed necessary to
replace ones in the area that
had begun to fade.
"These were needed as
we wanted to create a good

first impression to those
entering the community,"
read the report.
"Council was very support-
ive of this project;" said Busi-
ness and Economic Officer
Cronin. "The Point Clark
Lighthouse reopened last year
so it was important to have the
signs ready for the tourist sea-
son in Point Clark And also in
Lucknow we have Music in
the Fields and thousands of
people are coming to that
community each year, and we
feel it's important to have
those signs to direct visitors to
our various points of interest
in those communities."
In Lucknow a total 20 direc-
tional, park identification and
pedestrian map signs and pub-
lic building signage were
installed starting last year with
the final direction signs erected
downtown last month.
There was a slight delay in
the project last year, Cronin
said, due to construction on
Campbell Street.
The total cost of the Point
Clark and Lucknow signs
amounted to $159,000, with
one-third coming from the
Regional Tourism Organization
7 through a 2013 signage grant.
More signs outside of the
community along Bruce
County highways may be in
the works.
Also, Cronin said, Huron -
Kinloss may chose to erect
more signs in the future as
not all of its parks have ade-
quate signage.
"That might be some-
thing in the future that we
invest it," she said.

Councillor Glen McNeil
said he wasn't in favour of
granting the request either
because the Port Albert
General Store already
operates in the area and
they have gone through
the effort of advertising
and operating year-round.
"This person will just
come in, set up the pizza
place and take half of the
profits for the summer. I
don't really think it's fair,"
McNeil said.
The risk of not support-
ing the local business was
that it might close down,
he added.
Deputy Reeve Roger
Watt said he saw a prob-
lem with the municipality
regulating private
enterprise.
Councillor Jennifer
Miltenburg said she
agreed the municipality
should support the year-
round business but not
granting the permit based
on that was wrong.
"That doesn't seem to
be a very good reason not
to. You are talking about
somebody who is also try-
ing to have a little busi-
ness," she said.
Watt made a motion to
grant permission for the
wood fired pizza trailer to
operate but it was
defeated in a 4-2 vote.
