Hike for Hospice May 1 in Clinton On Sunday, May 1, Clinton will join thousands of people across the country, as they come together in order to raise funds for hospice pallia- tive care programs and services. In the 14th year of the Hike for Hospice Palliative Care, Huron Hospice Volunteer Ser- vice is more excited than ever to host this year's Hike, to be held at noon at the Clinton Public Hospital. Hikers also have the chance to win a $300 Canadian Tire gift card, a Fitbit, or a $50 iTunes card. While the Hike is coordi- nated nationally, due to the financial support of GSK, 100% of the funds raised in our community remain here. The funds raised this year by Huron Hospice Volunteer Ser- vice will be used to provide many desperately needed ser- vices to the residents of Huron County. With your support Huron Hospice Volunteer Ser- vice is able to offer support to individuals, caregivers and their families who are facing life limiting illnesses and end of life situations. Hospice palliative care pro- grams are still at least 50% funded by charitable dona- tions, and families must bear part of the cost of dying at home, in longer-term care - almost anywhere outside a hospital. The money raised through the Hike provides physical, emotional and social assistance to patients and their families and loved ones. Huron Hospice Volunteer Ser- vice is working toward ensur- ing that more Canadians, especially in our own com- munity, receive the end -of -life care they wish for. To support or participate in Hike for Hospice Palliative Care, or for more information, please contact The Hospice Team at 519-482-3440 ext. 6301, or register online at Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association - Hike for Hospice website or at the Huron Hospice Volunteer Ser- vice website. MPP Thompson joins farmers in opposition of neonic insecticide ban Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson called on Premier Kathleen Wynne to fix a sig- nificant oversight in the gov- ernments' neonicotinoid reg- ulations that bans the only seed treatment in Canada that can be used for the corn flea beetle. "The government has the power to fix its mistake and allow the use of seed treat- ment to save corn crops this season," Thompson said March 10 in a media release. "Unfortunately, the Liberals have refused to listen to the concerns of farmers and are unwilling to make any changes that would prevent the loss of crops." According to Thompson, the Liberal government has told famers across Ontario to protect their crops from the corn flea beetle this season despite banning the only fed- erally approved seed treat- ment for this pest last year. Yesterday, five busloads of farmers drove to Toronto to attend a hearing at the Ontario Court of Appeal regarding the Grain Farmers of Ontario's lawsuit against the provincial government. The lawsuit is aimed at delaying the implementation of provincial regulations on neonicotinoid seed treatments. "The facts speak for them- selves," she said during Ques- tion Period. "The Liberals have botched the rollout of their neonics ban so badly that they are now facing a law- suit from farmers. Many farm- ers will face financial hardship if changes aren't made to the ban, but the Liberals still refuse to listen:' A joint report released by the Pest Management Regula- tory Agency, the U.S. Environ- mental Protection Agency and the State of California found that neonicotinoids are not a threat to honeybees. The Ontario PC Caucus has long advocated for a science - based approach to neonicotinoids. Instead, Thompson said the government has taken a "heavy-handed" approach with the agricultural sector by mandating the reduction of neonic use by 80%, despite having no conclusive evi- dence it may decrease bee mortality rates.
