Sideliners put on spirited show for Kingsbridge Centre's summer concert series
Sheila Pritchard
Contributor
The Kingsbridge Centre wel-
comed local Irish -Country trio
the Sideliners for an evening of
music and merriment.
The Goderich-based group,
who has been performing
together for 10 years, treated the
all -ages audience to a mix of con-
temporary Country covers, mod-
ern Irish melodies, and tradi-
tional Irish tunes on July 8, 2016.
The group has nearly five dec-
ades of musical experience
between them and features Dave
McKee, Mike Crocker, and
Finola MacGinty.
Mckee, who started playing
mandolin at the age of four,
began classical piano lessons at
age six and took up the guitar by
the age of nine, has since added
Celtic harp to his roster of instru-
ments. McKee began singing at
an early age and is also a song-
writer and has a catalogue of
close to 100 songs. In the Side -
liners, McKee plays piano,
acoustic guitar, bass guitar and
sings back-up vocals.
Crocker, who plays guitar and
mandolin for the Sideliners, is
also a multi -instrumentalist and
discovered guitar as a teenager
in the 70s after several years of
vocal choir and piano training. It
was guitar that carried him
through to cover bands and
songwriting, Little Theatre musi-
cals and private music instruc-
tion. Over the years, Crocker has
added bass, banjo, and ukulele,
along with other instruments, to
his arsenal and continues to play
in rock, folk and choral groups.
Sideliners singer Finola
McGinty moved to Goderich
from Northern Ireland in 1988.
She has been singing actively

at the Kingsbridge Centre. They are the second group to perform in an ongoing summer concert series at the
Centre.
since she was 10 years old when
she began singing at weddings
and parties, and later at pubs
and house concerts in Northern
Ireland. McGinty has been a
member of St. Peter's Catholic
Church choir for almost 28 years
and has performed at the Celtic
Roots festival. She has also
entertained at local coffee house
events, house concerts and for
various fundraising activities.
For Friday's performance,
guests at the Centre first enjoyed a
45 -minute set of toe -tapping
tunes, song dedications, and light-
hearted humour and banter
exchanged among the noticeably
close-knit band, followed by a
20 -minute intermission during
which visitors and friends min-
gled and helped themselves to
refreshments and snacks. Artwork
by local visual artists was also on
display for viewing and purchase.
Then, as the evening's light
slipped away behind a backdrop
of century -old stained glass
windows, the energetic and
engaging second set was closed
with a traditional Irish blessing
and a standing ovation from the
captivated crowd.
"It was really a wonderful,
warm, appreciative audience,"
said MacGinty after the show.
"We totally enjoyed it; such a
great response. We didn't know
what to expect really, but it was
very casual, very laid back, and
everybody was very supportive."
"It was the first time I've got a
standing ovation," said McKee.
"It was a fun gig," added
Crocker.
All three musicians agreed
that the restored, 100 -year old
historical church made for an
"excellent" venue. "The building
has a nice sound," said McKee.
"There are wonderful acoustics
in this building."
Sideliners were the second
performers in the Centre's free
summer concert series, hosted
by Kingsbridge on 21 and St.
Joseph's Kingsbridge Commu-
nity (SJKC). The summer con-
cert series was kicked off on
June 24th, with a performance
by Goderich's Kim and Travis
Teed, a husband -wife duo that
entertained with their inspired
performance of favourite clas-
sics from the 50s and 60s, along
with country classics and folk
songs.
On July 23rd the Kingsbridge
Centre's concert series continues
as Reynolds, Robinson & Lodge
return for their second perfor-
mance at the Centre since it's
reopening last year, bringing
their eclectic blend of original
acoustic folk music, with influ-
ences from Bluegrass, Jazz,
Celtic and Country.
