Goderich Co-op Gallery welcomes Barb Grace as July guest artist
Local artist Barb Grace
will be the Goderich CoOp
Gallery guest artist for July.
Grace's show will open on
Saturday July 2, 2016 at 54
Courthouse Square, Lower
Level, for an opening recep-
tion between 2 p.m., and 4
p.m.
Those who can't make it
on Saturday will find the gal-
lery open from 10 a.m, to 5
p.m. from Monday to
Saturday.
Grace's development as
an artist is an example to any
parent with a child who has
an art interest.
She related how support-
ive her parents had been,
when, as a youngster, she
expressed an interest in art.
She was given art related
gifts for Christmas and birth-
days, and an after school
tutor was hired to help
develop her skills.
Her tutor, Inga, was key in
the young artist's
development.
Grace said Inga, "taught
me how to see." A painting
done with her tutor, won a
prize
during her high school art
career.
Barb is a Graduate of the
Ontario College of Art, and
went on to do some
independent
studies at the University
of Guelph, thinking that
she might like to be a
medical illustrator. She
eventually settled into a
career as a graphic
designer, doing occasional
commissions.
Throughout her child-
hood, she maintained a con-
nection to this area visiting
her Grandparent's farm at
Kintail every summer. So
retirement to Goderich in
2002 was a natural progres-
sion for her. Since retiring to
this area, Grace's develop-
ment as an artist has "taken
off."
Her interest is as a "Figu-
rative Painter" and she finds
herself drawn to anything
from the past, and often uses
old black and white photos
as inspiration for her work.
She likes to paint in a series,
and has completed a Ceme-
tery Series, a Laundry Series,
and a White Churches series.
She always paints with oils
on canvas, harkening back to
those early tutorials with
Inga.
Grace spends a month
each year travelling and
exploring, usually into the
American southwest.
Her interest has been
piqued by the array of old
signage she sees, both in
small forgotten
towns, and also along
major routes. She finds
that even though a mod-
ern throughway has been
built, it has not erased
vestiges of the past, as
many of the old signs are
still evident. She said it
was almost as if "time had
stood still." Thus, it seems
appropriate that this
showing of recent work is
titled "Sign of the Times,"
featuring work from this
current stop in her artistic
