It was a last chance to

tory -- literally.
The East Ashfield History
Book Committee opened its
books June 8, 2016, for pre-
sent and former residents to
peruse and then correct,
omit or include information
about their families.
Debbie Bauer, Marian
Zinn and Bell Hackett have
been working on the crea-
tion of this edition of the
East Ashfield History Book
near seven years now, and as
they hope to publish in 2017
in time for Canada's 150th
anniversary they have to put
the pens down sometime.
"We do have to call a stop
at some point," said Bauer.
"We can't keep collecting
and expect to publish next
year:'
Around the main room of
the Dungannon Agricultural
Hall Wednesday from 1 to 8
p.m. were folding tables
marked by concession num-
bers located within East Ash-
field. The residents would
then check the information
the committee had on their
families. If a death was
skipped over, the family
could add it in. Or if

complete and remit this form/void cheque electronically.
After hour payments may be left in the letter slot

not relieve the taxpayer from responsibility for payment
nor the liability of penalty charges for late payment.
someone had a family story
that could help to create a
fuller picture of the area, it
would be jotted down.
Scanners were also on
hand if people brought in
old pictures.
"We've been working on
creating family histories
where there weren't any,"
Bauer said from the agricul-
tural hall. "And after six years
of collecting, fine tuning,
now we open it up and say
`come, read your stuff and if
you find anything missing
please bring in a picture, fill
in the blanks for births,
deaths, marriages,' that sort
of things."
She urged those to contact
the committee as soon as
possible if you have any
information for the book,
including pictures, though
by the printing of this article,
it maybe too late.
"So please contact your
family and get on it. This is
your last chance to get stuff
added," she said.
Based on how much mate-
rial they already have, they
predict the book will be two
volumes and cover from the
1840s when properties were
first acquired from the
Crown to the day it goes to
print.
The reason for the abun-
dance of information can
somewhat be attributed to
the improvement in technol-
ogy. Scanners, printers and
email have made the acqui-
sition and transmission of
information that much
quicker and hassle free, said
the book's editor Rhea Ham-
ilton Seeger.
"We've worked on previ-
ous history books before so
we're not new to the game,
and every time we do a book
the technology gets better
and better and better," she
said. "People have scanners
in their homes or have

access to scanners so pic-
tures are coming by email.
People are typing their mate-
rial, which makes it quicker.
People are firing off emails. I
fired one to a lady this week
and she sent back three
emails with all corrections.
It's wonderful. It's quicker.
It's still a lot of work, but it's
quicker:'
Another reason, Bauer
gave, was an increased inter-
est in regional and ancestral
histories.
More people are curious
about where their families
came from, she said, adding
that interest in genealogy is
growing as can be seen in
the number of ancestry web-
sites popping up such as
ancestry.com.
"So this gives people the
catalyst to look further," she
said.
The book is an update and
continuation of "Bush Trails
to Present Tales," a history of
the region produced by the
Dungannon Women's Insti-
tute in the early 1980s and
"Frontier Ways to Modern
Days" by the Trinity United
Church Women of Ashfield
published in 1976.
Other source material
comes from "Once Upon A
Time ... In Dungannon,"
published in 2005 as well as
local tweedsmuir histories,
which the Grey Roots
Museum and Archive
describes as "intensely
local, scrapbook style his-
tory books compiled by
Women's Institute
branches."
When it's done, it will be a
history book of East Ashfield
but told through the per-
sonal stories of families,
Bauer said, adding what
makes history important is
that it's about who we are
and where we came from.
"It's stories that touch
families and touch lives
and in many cases change
direction of family and lives
and that makes it impor-
tant," she said. "We don't
know why some families
aren't any more, but you
start digging, you start find-
ing out a few things and
you start getting a clearer
picture."
And they don't want to
leave anyone out, she said.
