with Our Beautiful Sons:
Remembering Matthew Dinning
The Blyth Festival opens
its 42nd season with Our
Beautiful Sons: Remember-
ing Matthew Dinning
A riveting new play by
Christopher Morris and
directed by the Festival's
artistic director Gil Garratt,
the powerful true life drama
runs from June 15 to Aug. 6
in Blyth's Memorial Hall.
Our Beautiful Sons:
Remembering Matthew Din-
ning is based on the true
story of a local family, the
Dinning's of Wingham (just
ten minutes from Blyth).
Their eldest son, Matthew,
was a dynamic, funny, and
charming young man, adored
by the community. Matthew's
first posting with the Cana-
dian Forces was at Petawawa
in May 2004, as a member of
the Military Police. In April of
2006, at 23 years young, Cpl
Matthew Dinning was killed
in Gumbad province, Afghan-
istan. A year later, his younger
brother, and the Dinning's
only other child, Brendon,
volunteered for active service
in Afghanistan. The Canadian
Forces called his parents and
asked them how to proceed.
Should they grant his request,
knowing the sacrifice this
family had already made for
their country? Should they
reject it? How do a loving
mom and dad make a deci-
sion like this? This is a play
about the bonds of family, the
search for bravery, and the
always complicated paths to
manhood, motherhood, and
peace. This powerful play was
written after extensive inter-
views with the Dinning's
themselves, who opened their
home and their hearts to the
playwright throughout the
creation of this singular piece.
This is a prime example of
what Blyth does best: telling
powerful local stories, and
putting relevant, original
Canadian plays onstage.

Pine River Watershed group plantings continue to improve region
CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 1
"The success of the pine
river watershed is that it's a
community,' she said. "It's
neighbours working with
neighbours, and that's what
we're celebrating today."
Dianne Saxe, the Environ-
mental Commissioner of
Ontario who was in town
touring with the MPP, said
that during her job as watch-
dog over Ontario's environ-
mental, energy and climate
performance, she gives and
receives bad news daily, but
she also looks for good
examples, such as this one,
to inform people about.
"I'm also activating looking
for opportunities to tell people
good stories, good examples of
successes where communities
come together, where we can
make things better for our-
selves, for our kids, for our
grand kids. So thanks for giving
me a story; she said.
Next for PRWIN, said project
coordinator Mason, is they will
be working with partners the
Ministry of Environment and
the Saugeen Valley Conserva-
tionAuthority among others to
develop an integrated water
management system.
Water, she continued, is too
rapidly leaving the watershed
and taking nutrients from the
soil as well as sediment with it
as it makes its way to the lake,
which promotes the reproduc-
tion of algae and depletes the
agricultural land of the nutri-
ents necessary to grow crops.
"These trees will cool the
streams, provide life litterforthe
macro invertebrates, but they
won't be able to adjust to the
climate change phenomenon
that is coming. We need to look
at water management from a
broader perspective," she said.
To prevent this, PRWIN
with its several partners has
been building wetlands and
sediment control basins, all of
which, she concluded, would
not be possible without the
support of the community.
"All of these things would
not be possible without the
cooperation that exists within
this community and I think
that is the true secret to why
this group has been successful
is that ability to cooperate and
to make decisions that benefit
everyone," she said.

Lucknow 4H Beef Club recaps two meetings, Metske memorial award discussed
Michaela Rodger
Lucknow 4-H
The second meeting of the
Lucknow 4-H Beef Club was
held at Lucknow United
Church on May 4.
We started the meeting
with the 4-H pledge and took
a moment of silence for a
member we sadly lost in the
previous week, Brandon
Metske. The minutes from
the last meeting and the
treasures report were read.
Afterwards, we discussed
when certain sheets are due
and what to do if you have a
companion animal and
about the next fundraiser.
The fundraiser was held
on May 7 at Home Hardware
in Lucknow. Then we dis-
cussed our ideas about a
having a memorial award for
Brandon Metske.
Our guest speaker for this
meeting was Ed McGugan
from Britespan. He had a
very informative slide pres-
entation that showed us dif-
ferent barn designs and dif-
ferent materials used on
these barns, which have cer-
tain purposes. Ventilation
seems to have a big effect on
beef animals. A gift was
given to Ed as a show of our
appreciation. Then we got
divided into three groups to
create our own barn design.
The three types of barns
were a feed lot, cow/calf
barn, and a show barn. As Ed
stuck around to rotate the
room and help us members,
the meeting was adjourned
with snacks.
The first meeting of the
Lucknow 4-H Beef Club was
held at Lucknow Arena on
April 13. We started the
meeting off with the 4-H
pledge.
To get to know everyone,
Christine Maclntyre
(Leader) did the meetings
roll call. As everyone gath-
ered in a circle, we had to say
our name, why you do 4-H,
and one thing on your
bucket list. When everyone
returned to their seats, we
voted on our new executive
for this year. Which are the
following:
President - Brad Macln-
tyre, Vice President - Maggie
Durnin, Secretary - Sarah
Durnin, Treasurer - Tyler
Murray, and Press Reporter -
Michaela Rodger.
Next our club went over
our financial balance, as well
as show and meeting dates.
We discussed about having a
companion animal with
their 4-H project and going
for the gold competition and
putting in a team.
As the meeting was short
and sweet, we watched the
"Social Media Revolution
Video" and certain parts of
"Temple Grandin." Temple
Grandin is an autistic
woman who understands
animals very well. As she
