250,000th tree planted
along the watershed

The Pine River Watershed
Initiative Network (PRWIN)
commemorated the planting
of its 250,000th tree May 26,
with the staking of a plaque
near one of two observing
yew trees in Lewis Park in
Ripley.
Since 2002, PRWIN has
been working to improve the
Pine River Watershed, a his-
torically deforested agricul-
tural land, with the purpose
of protecting source water,
vegetation and animals in
the region.
And while the accom-
plishment should be
applauded, the network has
much more work to do to
protect the area's source
water, said PRWIN project
coordinator Adrienne
Mason.
"It's not stopping today,"
she said to the two dozen
people assembled at the
Lewis Park gazebo. "We
don't want to give ourselves
a round of applause and go
home. We want to give our-
selves a round of applause
and get some more trees into
the ground."
The organization has been
planting trees for the last five
years, she said, and while
they have improved the for-
est cover from about 6 to 8
Wednesday, June 1, 2016
per cent their goal is 30 per
cent, which is the require-
ment for a healthy
watershed.
To date, PRWIM has
planted 262,000 trees along
the watershed, she said.
Following her speech she
told The news that the 1 -per
cent increase in forest
cover is a significant
accomplished and it took a
lot of work, but it is only the
beginning.
"It's a drop in the bucket of
a huge problem, but the
more drops there are the
fuller the bucket will get," she
said.
The success of the group,
she added during her
speech, is attributed to the
ability to cooperate and
work with the local land-
owners along the watershed
who have donated 250 acres
of land for this cause.
The farmers' donations
affects their bottom lines,
she said, and PRWIN are
grateful.
"Without that generosity
and cooperation it wouldn't
have happened," she said.
Huron -Bruce's Conserva-
tive MPP Lisa Thompson,
who was also in attendance,
congratulated the group on
its achievement as a
community.
