Half of home heating equipment fires are reported during the months of Decem- ber, January, and February. Some simple steps can prevent most heating - related fires from happening. • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater. • Have a three-foot "kid -free zone" around open fires and space heaters. • Never use your oven to heat your home. • Have a qualified profes- sional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment accord- ing to the local codes and manufacturer's instructions. • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manu- facturer, for fuel burning space heaters. • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home. • Test smoke alarms monthly. On Dec. 27, 2015 at 9:56 a.m., the South Bruce OPP received a report of an All -Ter- rain Vehicle (ATV) theft from a residence along Absalom Street east in Mildmay. Sometime between midnight on Dec. 27, 2015 and 9 a.m. on Dec. 27, 2015, a green Polaris SE8 ATV was taken from a detached garage on the property. The vehicle has a side gun rack as well. Anyone with information should call police or Crimestoppers at 1 -800 -222 -TIPS. Make sure it's clear before it's in gear The cold weather has arrived in South- ern Bruce County and the South Bruce OPP wants to see motor- ists prepared for winter driving. Safe winter driving requires drivers slowing down and anticipating haz- ards before they become a problem. This can't be done if the vehicle's win- dows are covered in frost, snow or ice. The Highway Traffic Act of Ontario pro- vides a fine of $110 for motorists that choose to drive without a clear view, but the consequences can be far worse if you injure someone because you can't see where you're going. Leave extra time to get to your des- tination in winter months and take the time to clear the vehicle win- dows for the benefit of all road users.
