HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 2016-02-24, Page 3A store like no other CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 1 The Holyrood General Store has been open along Bruce Road #1 since 1904, however when the Millers took it over Feb. 4, 1986, it was barely functioning, only left open by the pre- vious owner to prevent the Post Office at the back of the store from closing. The two biggest changes, Lucy said, in the past 30 years was the computeri- zation of the Post Office and when the Mennonite group moved into the area in 1994, which caused for the store's inventory to expand slightly. "If I wanted to keep the Post Office, I had to put in a computer. That was a hard curve for me," she said. And concerning the change from when the Mennonites moved in, they just added larger packages of dry goods. "Well, when the men- nonite community moved in they definitely wanted larger packages like big bags of flour and big bags of oatmeal. And some ingredients I had to go find and put in," Lucy said. However, when entering the store this past Satur- day for the 30 year cele- bration, it was like -- as the cliche goes -- stepping back in time. About a dozen people of the old order populated the store, eating doughnuts and drinking coffee and hot chocolate, offered by the Millers on this special day. It's inventory includes root beer extract and hunt- ing and fishing licenses, nails and eggs, bread and mosquito repellent. Essen- tially most anything you would ever need. Though there is one item that has, so this writer has been told many times, people from all over coming to the store -- it's ice cream. "Last year we emptied 1,834 tubs of ice cream," said Lucy. "We calculated [a tube has] 23 two -scoop cones. They're generous, that's why people keep coming back." That's 20,907 litres of ice cream. Their busiest day for their staple product ever was last year's Victoria Day when they scooped 757 cones. "That was the most we ever scooped," she said. Gerald Murray, the local mailman, was at the store shopping that morning and he said there's noth- ing comparable to the Holyrood General Store. "Nothing quite like it in the States," he said. "Or in Canada." Gerald has been the area's mailman officially since 1977, though Lucy said he's been doing it since he was five when Gerald's father worked the same route. "It's the friendly people that you deal with," he said before leaving the store with his purchase. "That's the biggest thing of all. And there's barely anything you can't find here. Yeah, it's real unique because you can get just about everything you need, a lot of things you don't need maybe, but somebody needs them. And the friendly people you deal with, that's the two things I can think of." Leandra Urbanek, an employee of the store but the Millers refer to all those who work there affectionately as helpers, added to this. "I've been waiting to use this quote," she said hap- pily. "One guy came in here and he said, `If they don't have it, you don't need it.' That's it. That's it." Urbanek said there's nothing quite like working for the General Store and that she never wants to leave. "I love it," she said. Lucy said the past 30 years have been quite the journey. "Some people ask if it seems like it's been 30 years and I say yes and no, but I didn't know," she said. "You never know when you start a new ven- ture how's it going to end up."
