22 youth compete
at Lucknow Legion
speech contest

It was a night of oration
Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, as 22
local students took to the
stage at the Royal Canadian
Legion, Branch 309, to partic-
ipate in the service organiza-
tion's annual speech contest.
For over 40 years the local
Legion has been holding this
event where students give a
speech of their writing in
hopes of being chosen to
represent their area in the
district and then possible the
provincial championships.
According to the Legion's
website, "the Public Speak-
ing Contest, part of the
Legion's Youth and Educa-
tion program, is meant to
give young people an oppor-
tunity to speak in public
The night saw the finalists
from the local two schools
(Lucknow Central Public
School and Brookside Public
School) present their
speeches in front of about
100 people.

The winners from this
event will compete will rep-
resent the Lucknow Legion
branch in the district finals.
In the primary category
(Grades 1-3), Elle Schu-
macker came in first with
her retelling of "Wolf who
cried boy," followed by
Annan Moffat, and Maya
Gjesing.
In the junior category
(Grades 4-6), Madison
Ritchie took first with "The
return to wonderland.
Jayden Maki came in second
and Shelby Barger came in
third.
For the intermediate cate-
gory (Grades 7-9), Will
Davey of Brookside Public
School finished first with his
speech,"2015 Toronto Blue
Jays:' In second came Haley
Gibson and Damion Don-
aldson came in third.
Cash prizes up to $1,000
will be handed out to those
who win provincials.

Nursing and retirement home flu
immunization rates

More staff at local nursing and
retirement homes realize the value of
flu shots for both their clients and
themselves as immunization rates are
up slightly from last season.
Staff vaccination rates at local nurs-
ing homes averaged 75 per cent, up
from 74 per cent in 2014-2015. All staff
at Country Lane Nursing Home in
Chatsworth received flu shots. Both
Errinrung Nursing Home in Thornbury
and Golden Dawn Nursing Home in
Lion's Head reported 98 per cent of
staff protected.
Local retirement homes averaged 75
per cent, up from 74 per cent in 2014-
2015. Both Maple Court Villa in Walk-
erton and Kelso Pines in Owen Sound
reported 97 per cent of staff received
the flu vaccine.
Nursing and retirement homes also
reported resident flu vaccination rates.
Choices Living Retirement Residence
in Hanover, Elgin Abbey Lodge in
Chesley, Kelso Villa Retirement Home
in Owen Sound, Nine Mile Villa Retire-
ment Home in Lucknow and Georgian
Heights Long -Term Care Home in
Owen Sound had all their residents
protected with the flu shot.
The vaccination rate for healthcare
workers in local hospitals varied from
50 per cent to 83 per cent for an overall
average of 62 per cent, a slight
decrease from 65 per cent in the 2014-
2015 season. At Grey Bruce Health
Services Lion's Head, 83 per cent staff
had their flu shot.
Facilities report immunization rates
to Public Health as of December 15,
2015. Current rates may be higher as
additional staff and residents may
receive shots past the reporting
deadline.
