The new Lucknow Central Public School principal, Mark Kolohon, is looking to create a safe,
engaging and inclusive environment for both teachers and students.
LCPS' new principal to teach
students to 'advocate for themselves'
Darryl Coote
Reporter
On Jan. 4, 2016, Mark
Kolohon, 60, became the
new principal of Lucknow
Central Public School
(LCPS).
The 60 -year-old Chesley
resident has spent his entire
career in education in the
Bluewater District School
board, having taught at
Bruce Peninsula Secondary
School in Lion's Head and
Wiarton's Bruce Peninsula
Shores.
He then worked at the
board office for 10 years
before becoming vice prin-
cipal at Grey Highlands Sec-
ondary School for three
years. He was then vice
principal this past Septem-
ber at his former Lion's
Head school.
Late last year, the Goder-
ich native was approached
by the Bluewater School
Board and was asked if he'd
like to become principal at
LCPS.
"It was an honour to be
asked. It really was," he said.
Now at the school's helm
he will strive to offer his staff
with the support they need
to help their students
succeed.
"What I know is that the
most influence on a stu-
dent's learning is the
teacher in the classroom,
and it would be my role to
create an environment that
supports the teacher to sup-
port the students," he told
The Sentinel from his office
on Feb. 4.
To do that he is working
to create an environment
that is safe, engaging and
inclusive for both students
and teachers.
The focus, he said, will be
on helping students to fully
understand themselves as
learners and individuals
with the purpose of teach-
ing them to be advocates for
themselves.
He and his staff, Kolohon
said, will be examining ways
to better support students
"to be more aware of them-
selves as learners, as
individuals, and how their
interactions and relation-
ship with others not only
supports a community that
we are trying to build here,
but also will supports their
own learning."
One method he hopes to
achieve this is with the
school's current "technol-
ogy refresh," which will see
all of the school's older
computers and laptops
replaced with cloud com-
puting devices such as
iPads.
The more advanced tech-
nology, he said, will allow
for the students to connect
with the greater world.
"One time they were pen
pals," he said. "... We can
have the technology now
that we can actually go into
other classrooms from
around the world."
He elaborated that LCPS
could connect with local
schools within the province
as well as schools
internationally.
