Grey -Bruce
snowmobile trails
start to open

The recent winter wallop
has led to Grey -Bruce snow-
mobile trails starting to
open.
The rail line from Owen
Sound to Dundalk was the
first one in the counties to
open to snowmobilers on
the weekend, and since then
trails in the Sauble Beach
area were also opened.
Other trails aren't expected
to be too far behind.
"We almost got a little bit
too much too quickly," said
Karen Buratynski, manager
of the Ontario Federation of
Snowmobile Clubs District
9, which includes all of Grey -
Bruce and the northern
parts of Huron, Perth and
Wellington counties. "That
literally has been the issue
with some of the other clubs
opening."
Buratynski said some club
volunteers were still staking
trails, putting signs up, mov-
ing fences and co-ordinating
with landowners when the
snow hit.
"This past weekend there
were a lot of the club volun-
teers going out and finishing
up some stuff," said Buratyn-
ski. "A lot of the staking and
signing can only be done
behind a groomer because
there is so much snow. They
are definitely working and it
is looking like we will have
many more trails open
before the weekend."
Buratynski said the open-
ing is the earliest in recent
memory, with a couple of
occasions she recalled when
trails opened between
Christmas and the new year.
"Many people want to
come and ride over Christ-
mas and often times Mother
Nature just doesn't co-oper-
ate," said Buratynski. "This
year it sounds like she lis-
tened and there will be rid-
ing opportunities for
Christmas:'
Last winter, the snowmo-
bile season was almost non-
existent, with few riding
opportunities and not until
after the new year.
Buratynski said the fore-
cast heading into this winter
was that it could be a good
one for snowmobiling.
"We were anxiously await-
ing, but let's just say cau-
tiously optimistic they were
going to be correct this year;'
she said. "It looks like they
were correct. All signs are
that we are going to have a
very good, long winter and it
is certainly starting off right."
Buratynski said the

forecast looks promising as
well, with temperatures
remaining mostly below
freezing over the long range.
Swampy areas weren't
frozen before the snow fell,
but now that the groomers
have been out and packed
the snow in, the trails have
been freezing up nicely.
"It has allowed the frost to
drive into the ground,"
Buratynski said. "Some more
cold weather before we get a
warm-up will be positive."
Trails to the south of
Grey -Bruce, in the the area
of Arthur, Fergus, Belwood,
Listowel, Palmerston and
Brussels have already
opened and Buratynski
attributed that to less snow
falling on those areas than in
Grey -Bruce.
"I believe the fact our
southern clubs were able to
open before our northern
clubs were, is they didn't get
quite as much snow as we
did," said Buratynski. "As
soon as it hit the groomers
were able to complete their
trail installation. In the Grey -
Bruce area we got so much
snow that it just immobilized
everybody."
Snowmobilers are still
being urged to stay off the
trails until they are open,
and so far Buratynski said
most riders appear to be
listening.
"We have been talking
about it for years now and
begging people to stay off
the trails before they open,
both for their own safety and
out of respect for the private
landowners," said Buratyn-
ski. "It does sound like peo-
ple have listened to that this
weekend."
