Canada 10cna Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Royal Canadian Legion Branch 309, Lucknow marking 75th anniversary Sarah Taylor Lucknow Legion This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Lucknow Legion. To mark this occasion, we are inviting all members, vol- unteers and supporters to join us in celebrating this Saturday, Dec. 10, from 8 p.m. until mid- night. The Crippled Ducks will be performing. For those wanting to take a walk down memory lane, photos and memorabilia will be on dis- play. There will be a turkey draw, and lunch will be provided. Then... and now... The first recorded meeting of RCL Branch 309 was held on Jan. 20, 1941. Ten members were signed up on that date, seven of them forming the Branch Executive. By May 1941, membership had grown to 24 members, and in August 1941 ten new mem- bers were initiated. Today, Branch 309 has close to 200 members. The first ever fundraiser held by Branch 309 was a raf- fle. The prizes were a suit of clothes, a hat and a pair of shoes. In that first year, the Branch held several dances. To adver- tise these events, the Branch secretary would write to CKNX to have announcements made. What a difference that is from today's world of electronic communication and instant advertising through social media! Although many things have changed in the last 75 years, one thing remains the same: Branch 309 would not exist today without the ongoing involvement and support of its members and the commu- nity. In 2016, the Branch held many successful events with and for the community: monthly wing nights, Canada Day fish fry, youth public speaking and a Canadian Zip oar eattabiat legion e tvrgario OrubintiaAe ma Tareerlrrd 1u hichHOw L r . rich No. 3041 ar rbc r i fopde al 7S raw of d d u WI service fo tePurpusasrrad Objeceiof Thr Royal dmahlfain 1171051 Old r -v CAM dry, WAIC S -r-,.(17:711.-1:145)" HN Shared Lucknow Legion marks its 75th anniversary with a party on Dec. 10, 2016. On Saturday, we are celebrat- ing this milestone in the Branch's history, but we also want to show our gratitude and appreciation for all the support you have shown us. LUCKNOW NEWS Lucknow Carolfest tonight, Legion 75th anniversary Dec. 10 Ruth Dobrensky What wonderful but strange weather we've been having, the end of November was more like late September, but what a treat. Tonight is Lucknow's Car- olfest at St. Joseph's in Kings- bridge, it starts at 7:30, but be there early to be sure to get a seat. This past Sunday, Handel's Messiah was performed at Knox Presbyterian Church in Goderich by the Blyth Festival Singers and The Stratford Con- cert Choir. There are several local people in the Blyth Choir and the concert was absolutely wonderful. This past Saturday, Lucknow held their Novice Hockey Tour- nament, it was the 24th annual tournament. Congratulations to all the players, they all did a fantastic job. This past Saturday also saw Dungannon holding their annual Christmas in the Coun- try craft and bake sale at the Ag. Hall. There was something for everyone. HAWK Theatre presented their Christmas production this past weekend to sold out crowds. The entire cast of The Wiz- ard of Oz was made up of children from Lucknow and the surrounding area. By all accounts everyone who was lucky enough to get a ticket thoroughly enjoyed the show. Congratulations to the direc- tors, crew and wonderful cast. Lucknow Legion Branch 309 will be celebrating their 75th anniversary on Saturday, Dec. 10 starting at 8 p.m., all members and supporters of the Legion are welcome to attend. It is with sadness that Mary and Russ Mackie will no longer be running Mary's Family Restaurant, they have been a part of the Lucknow business community for a long time and will be missed. Fortunately, the restaurant will still be open for business. I personally am witness to the concern of people about the restaurant staying open. I was recently shopping in Hanover and started talking to a lady from Kincardine and men- tioned I was from Lucknow and a man behind me in the queue, asked, did you say you were from Lucknow. My response was yes, he then asked if it was true that Mary's had been sold and would it be staying open. My answers to both questions was yes, which made him both sad and happy, I'm not sure where he was from. Sympathies of the commu- nity to the families of: Gerald Hyndman, 66, Guelph; Mary Taylor, 86, St. Helens; John Kuik, 77, Lucknow (formerly Ashfield Twp.); and Kenneth MacDonald, 72, Holyrood.
