The Lucknow Sentinel, 2016-08-17, Page 11Wednesday, August 17, 2016 • Lucknow Sentinel 11 Grey Matter Beer Company will transform Kincardine location overlooking Lake Huron Troy Patterson Editor Lakeside Downtown Kin- cardine will see Grey Matter Beer Company establish a new social business approach over the next year. Michael Hueftlein recently purchased the downtown location on Queen Street across from the Annex build- ing, and plans to transform it into a tourism destination. Hueftlein confirmed the sale was soon to close over the phone with Kincardine News, and said he chose the Kincardine location for its views over Lake Huron, and a "thriving" and "extremely friendly" downtown. "It seemed to be a perfect fit," he said. "It's a beautiful, vibrant downtown core, so we hope to get people inter- ested and make it a great tourism attraction:' The brewery itself is named in recognition of "inventions, inventors, human advancement and explorers," he said, with the first brew - an American Pale Ale to be named 'Mission to Mars', recognizing humani- ty's next big quest into the cosmos. Other brews will be named as well, from stouts, to lager or wheat beers. Hueftlein came up with the business name as a way to give credit to the great pubs and watering holes of the past, where so many people in history have sat down, talked and come up with great ideas that bene- fited their communities, countries, or the world as a whole. "I want to create a place where people can look out onto the lake, relax, have a few beers and come up with great ideas," he said. Grey Matter Beer Com- pany involves a "significant" investment in the commu- nity, with renovations required to the former cloth- ing store and property. He hopes to create a look to the building that will draw in visitors for samplings, with a lakeview patio on the back and brewing equip- ment set up in the basement. The brewery plans to market and sell its own beer out of the Kincardine loca- tion, while partnering with local restaurants and even- tually selling packaged beer through the LCBO, said Hueftlein. Partnering with local caterers and restaurants will also be important, he said, as they will offer food services to pair with the beer and showcase other local businesses. He also plans to create 'One -Off' experimental batches of beer every couple of months, before making the recipe 'Open Source' for any homebrewer to create or modify. "It's really about the expe- rience and being open and transparent about it," he said. "I want to help in the advancing of the craft brew- ing industry as opposed to keeping everything secret," he said. "I hope it helps peo- ple for them to know exactly what's in it:' The microbrewery indus- try has been growing and community support for his idea has been outstanding Troy Patterson/Editor The Grey Matter Beer Company microbrewery will be locating in downtown Kincardine later in 2016. so far, he said. Support for other local breweries like Outlaw in Southampton and MacLean's Ales in Hanover and Neustadt Springs has led to their success. Hueftlein added he hopes to work together to create somewhat of a 'Brews Trail' in the area, that will see tours of each location and their supporters in Grey -Bruce. The Bruce County Com- modities Food Court at that match was so successful organizers established a scholarship for graduating students who will be main- taining a connection to agriculture. That connection does not have to be through further education. The $1,000 scholarship could go to a student fur- thering their education on a post -secondary agriculture program. They could be apprenticing in an agricul- ture -related field, or other- wise be substantially engaged in the business of farming. The application process involves a 1,000 word essay describing the applicant's future plans and desire to remain involved in agriculture. A resume should also be included in the application. The applicant should be graduating this year 2016. The application package should be e-mailed to agri- nwmo NUCLEAR WASTE MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION media@blackbumradio.com Deadline for entries is Sept. 12, 2016.
