Saturn and Mars are wandering through Scorpius this summer.
Star Column: The Creature
with the "Burning Sting"
John Hlynialuk
Bluewater Astronomical Society
Almost everyone can pic-
ture the scorpion: its claws
out -stretched, its vicious
hooked tail raised ready to
strike.
It is the stuff of night-
mares, one of two creatures
that may drop out of a boot
when you are camping and
you shake them out in the
morning. (The other night-
mare creature is a rattle-
snake). And if you try to
avoid both by staying out of
scorpion/rattlesnake coun-
try, you pretty much have
to be in the frozen polar
zones. Scorpions can be
found as far north as lati-
tude 50° N in Canada and
live on all continents except
Antarctica. There is a "very
cute" Northern Scorpion
that has been found in
Alberta and in the
Okanagan Valley of BC but
it is tiny, about the size of a
grasshopper. So, yes, shake
out your boots if you camp
or hike in those areas.
As for a perfectly harmless
scorpion, there is one in the
sky right now and though it
still possesses its stinger it
has been de -clawed. The
claws of Scorpius used to
include stars in the space to
its right in what is now the
constellation Libra. In Baby-
lonian and Greek astronomy
this part of the zodiac was
always associated with both
claws and balance scales.
The star which is the "north-
ern claw'; known as Zubens-
chamali is now part of Libra.
The "southern claw" is the
brightest star in Libra and
has my favourite star name:
"Zubenelgenubi" (doesn't
that just roll off your
tongue)? Memorize the third
star name in Libra, Zubenel-
hakrabi (also called Bra-
chium) and you are ready for
any astronomy trivia contest.
"Al Zuban"; the root of all
three names is Arabic for
"claw"
It is easy to find Scorpius if
you look due south just after
dark. All summer long, two
bright planets, Saturn and
Mars, are in its head, so just
look for three bright "stars"
above the southern horizon.
The one true star, the lower
vertex in that triangle, is
called Antares and is located
mid -way along the scorpi-
on's body. This slightly red-
dish star is the 15th brightest
in the sky and "only" 550
light years away.
The triangle of Saturn,
Antares and Mars slowly flat-
tens out, and around Aug
23/24, the three objects will
be lined up vertically, with
Mars in the middle. Mars
continues eastward and the
triangle inverts itself. The
Red Planet does most of the
trekking across Scorpius but
if you look carefully, you can
see Saturn changing its posi-
tion ever so slightly eastward
too" To the left of Scorpius is
the Milky Way, which crosses
the sky from south to east in
our summer and fall, and by
October, the scorpion will be
below the western horizon.
Still, the bright planets in the
west will continue to draw
our attention until the snow
flies in late November.

PS. A sharp-eyed reader
noted that in my last column
I misspelled Tesla's first
name. It should have been
Nikola not Nicholas. I stand
corrected.
