Rollout of natural gas
could start in Kincardine in 2017
Mary Golem
For Postmedia
The region could see the
arrival of natural gas in 2017.
In September 2015, the
municipalities of Kincardine,
Huron -Kinloss and Arran-
Elderslie partnered with
Edmonton -based EPCOR to
bring natural gas to resi-
dents, businesses and farms
in the three municipalities.
There are three phases to
the project that will see the
construction of a transmis-
sion grid first, in two seg-
ments totalling 110 km, and
then a distribution network
II4iiIs1►►►kb1 I 1111 i IakKs] 11
of 145 km to service the three
communities.
While routing of the gas
infrastructure is still being
developed, the current plan
will see one segment of the
transmission system from
the Wingham meter station
to the Bruce Industrial Park
by way of Ripley and Kincar-
dine. This will be approxi-
mately 75 km long. Another
segment will be from Dor-
noch to Paisley by way of
Chesley, about 35 km long.
The current routing plan
may change based on con-
sultation and route
optimization.
Approval from the Ontario
Energy Board is required
before construction of the
natural gas distribution net-
work can begin.
If approved, it is expected
that construction in the Kin-
cardine area would start in
2017-18, then Chesley in
2019, followed by Huron -Kin-
loss, Arran-Elderslie clerk
Peggy Rouse told members of
council at a recent meeting.
Open houses will be held
in the three communities in
the fall to update residents
on the status of the project.
No dates have been
announced.
