Soils for Winter Plants Before winter freezes the grounds solid, bring in sev- eral- bushels of good garden loam for -1 house plant pot-" ting during the winter. Hor- ticulturists with the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food tell us that good plants are essential to their' health" bpd vigorous growth. All flowering pot plants ture require a porous soil, containing nitrogen, phos phorus, and potash. The pro- per balance of , these ele- ments is important because the',nitrogen produces strong healthy leaves, the phospha- tes build up the plant's struc with a woody stem strut-• tural tissue, and the potash makes : a stronger rooting system To prepare a good potting soil, obtain a loose, pliable loam from the garden. To one bushel of this loam, add one-half bushel of good' or- ganic matter such as peat moss, or compost. Also add about one-half bushel of drsand to give better ainage. A good soil re quires the addition of major plant food elements. Add one 4 -inch pot of 5-20-20 fertil izer for flowering plants (use 20-20-20 for vegetative plants) for each original bushel of topsoil. If the soil in your area is quite acid or sour, add one. 3 -inch pot of hydrated lime to the mix- ture. For better results, sterilize the soil mixture. This can be done in small quantities in the oven (set temperature at 180° F). Place the soil loose 1'y in low flat pans. Dampen it untM forms a crumbly ball in the hand. Place pans in the oven for 30 minutes. Al- low the temperature of the soil to rise to 180°F). Meas- ure this accurately with a thermometer; temperature in excess of 180°F can lead to serious nutritional prob lems When plants are grown in this soil. 'AY -AWAY.
