Changes in
Education
In an effort to help inform
the general public of what is,
happening in today's. secondary
schools, teachers from this area'
and from all areas across the.
Province have prepared a series\
of articles stressing these spec-
ial two and four-year programs,
the work included. in the sec-
ondary school. and the oppor
tupities 'beyond.
Following is another in a
series of five such letters writ-
ten and edited by teachers.
EDUCATING THE "FUTURE
CREDITBUYER
By Hans HUyer
Thornbury District High School
Most of us today, winther we
like it or not — whether we ad-
mit it — are "buyers & credit."
We cent pay cash for every
thing. We are universally bound
up in the iystera. How can we
avoid its pitfalls — the over-ex-
tension of our pay cheques, the
time contracts And loan arrange-
ments that saddle us with high
interest -rate.s?
Fortunately, recently passed
Ontario laws offer us greater
protection, through the require-
ments of "ful disclosure". But
our high school, through a
more sophisticated approach to
learning, also prepare the stu-
dent for some of the realities
of life in" the money jungle.
In the four and five-year pro-
grams inmany high schools,
a niultitude„pf subjects can be
taken by the student that will
help him in, making financial
decisions he will have to make
later The four and five-year
courses in the Business and
Commerce branch offer "Busi-
ness Practice" in Grade -9 or
10. The course deals with,
among other topics, Budgeting;
to show 'how much money
should be put away for the
necessities of life, such as food,
clothing, shelter and insurance.
What monies are left over can
be used for monthly payments,
and such trainingmay help the
stddent.later to keep him afloat
in the whirlpbol of these pay-
ments "that are sO common to-
day. -.Maintaining and planning
a home is a course that gives
information about .propeqy
taxts.and insurance.
Paying the bilis, a' course
which outlines the merits of a
good credit rating, and how
companies collect their ac-
counts, show haw a retailer may
be of help in financing OT
large purchases, such as the.
stereophonic record player 'or
appliances.
Courses in Rusiness Law and
Economics, taught in'• Grades
10, 11 or 12, (depending on the
availability, 'of students and
teachers for' the subjects in
each school, stress discussions
on' bank interest rates, rates
charged by finance 'CiiMparlies,
credit unions and other credit
institutions, buying and selling
land, mortoges, and contracts.
Tlie course in Economics seeks
out the ho4 and why of .infla-
tion. The businiss Mathematics
and business finance courses
will itch the student in the
'mechanics' .oir credit and the cal-
culatia, of -the price of credit
interest.

that belong in the Business and
Cordtrierce branch in high
chool, are also taught. as op.

brandies; the Arts and Science,
and the Sclenie, Technology
and Trades branches. Those high
school students who. take some
or all of the above courses, as
they are offered in their school,
will be weir prepared to fend
for themselves when it comes
to putting their names on the
dotted line of a contract = be
it a contract to pay for a house
or e contract to repay money.
