The Jury convicted him because they- sincerely believed the girl
never left the County Road, never even got as far as the bridge
over the Bayfield River and never reached Highway No. 8.

Road north Mward Highway No. 8. One of thein also swore that
he saw Steve return alone to the bridge and get off his bicycle to
look idly around. A third witness -swore he saw Steve alone on
the bridge at about the same time.

The fact that three different persons were told that Lynne Har-
per was seen in 'Seaforth raises this issue: Could those defence
witnesses be right, and their direct evidence a true -alibi?

It is not fair to say that persons who kept silence all those years
will not come forward now. They have no cause to fear,any con-
sequences except gratitude. If these persons saw Lynne that eve-
ning, they -probably did not realize that, she had to, be dead by
7:45 p.m. for Steve to be guilty. They probably thought she was
killed by Steve after they saw her. Everyone knew the boy was
accused, tried and convicted, but few people knew the details.
