SUPERTEST STATION . Sundays,' Holidays, Everyday — Maple Leaf THIS WEEK AND NEXT by Ray Argyle MAO% MONKEY (- The Conununist' Party's grip. on 750 -.million Chinese appear ed.._.this -week to" -be faltering. The Peking regime 'was losing control' of Mao. Tsetung's Cul- tural ultural Revolution and the seeds of separatism, planted in such places as'the big southern pro- vince of Kwangtung, were bibs* homing into outright revolt. China, it. seemed, might be breaking up. The rigid control of the Communist Party had welded into a, nation, a bare 17 years ago. For .,the first time in half a century, China was made whole. The,,j'ttttter-vening years hada seen the tbllapse- of an empire, the agony of invasion and world conflict, and .finally, civil war which ended in Communist victory in 1949. • The upheaval spreading throughout China will be, re- solved only with the absolute triumph of one side or the oth- er in the Communist schism which 'is said to have already taken thousands of lives. The chaos and violence spawned by Mao ,Tet-tung's youthful Red Guard has clearly given the Peking Government second thoughts. Schools have been closed, industry and agria culture paralyzed. The Guard, warned to leave peasants alone during the harvest on which China must depend for surviv- al, is still marauding 'the coun- tryside, ,according to reports. Why this upheaval, this Great Cultural Revolution which has wreaked havoc far in excess of the damages done by Mao's other grandiose cam- paign, the Great Leap Forward of 10 years. ago? I put this question recently Remember! It takes but a moment to place an Expositor. Want Ad and be 'money in pocket. Ambassador tisuee' (who likes td joke of "Irish" -ances- try by explaining his name should be prounounced `Shea' , told me the Cultural Revolu- tion was launched by Mao in answer to a take-over bid by president Liu Shao-ch'i. Liu and Mao together hold two of the top three jobs in Communist China. The third, premier Chou En -tai, appears .so far to have carefully avoided Mao's, wrath, and may in fact, b"e the sole national figure capalble bf hold- ing the ceunury and party to- gether. ' -- The convolutions of the Great Cultural Revolution are too involved to detail here. But as well as being a struggle for power„ the . new Revolution is clearly the last gasp attempt of a• dying regime to..instill fresh revolutionary fervor in the na- tion's youth. , • . For it is evident the revolu- tion has already begun to turn against its makers, as do all successful revolutions. The So- viet Union went this same route, but it took the death of Stalin to release younger ..and more moderate elements within the Party. The break with "the Soviet Union — because ..Moscow had reached- an accord with the West, and thus must be a trai- tor to Communism — intensi- fied the struggle within China. The regime's achievement in nuclear weaponry has not less- ened the intensity of the inter- nal struggle. While the 'U.S. considers whether- to ~build a missile system to fend off pos- sible Chinese attack the Cul - .Lural Revolution rages on:- -It must be the hope of the Nationalist Chinese, in exile on Taiwan since 'two million rufugees fled there under Chiang Kai-shek's banner in 1949, that at last the time has come for -•their-.return to the mainland. For -this to happen, however, the mainland must .fall into complete disarray and chaos, and. even then the question of Soviet intervention would be a most serious one. It is perhaps more likely -that Mao will lose his. Great Cultural • Revolution and then from the seeds ,of China's pres- ent -near-anarchy will 'spring a regime with which the Nation- alists could honorably collabo- rate. The order and prosperity of Taiwan — in past years gener- ously bankrolled by the United States — remains : meanwhile a symbol of resistance to Com- munism in an Asia menaced by China's nuclear arsenal. vkited anreeMZy^ withi MOS. and yelatives ,l4 gersville, Mr. 4n4Mrs'o Gordon Hog. gaxth -Itava retwrnedi from. # ioUR day at FatRo., -•• Sunday visitors with Mr. and: Mrs. Jahn Tennplematt. and family were Mr. 'and Ma. no,. best Duncan, Exeter; Mr, ands' Mrs. Gordon -;yIaver and Robbie, London; Mr. and Mrs. Baja Mav- er, Judy and Brian, ,1! argphar; Dale Martyr, Russ.eitjale; Alec Scott, Cromarty; rrDavid .GapIing, Mitchell; Mg. and.Mrs. Bill May- er and Debbie, Fergus; and Mr. and Mrs. Don Mayer, Vicky, Sherry, Rhonda and Kirk, Cler- mont. • Mr. and Mrs. C./Cliff Miller and Fadi and Mr. Alvin War en attended Pcin.and visited with less Rosanna Warden, at= Montreal: Mits, Darlene Tennpletnaln 1/45 ited over tithe weekend ,N.411, Miss_`) oree ,M,artyn, Russeld:aEle Mass Ella Francis and Mr,: tInd.
