A recent issue of the Kitch-
ener Record tells how the
granddaughter of a Seaforth
couple won . the Baby of the
Year title at the Labor Day
show sponsored by the K -W
Labor Council, Kristine Schmitt
is, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Karl Schmitt; the former Lois
Maloney, a granddaughter of
,Mr. and Mrs. Frank Maloney,.
Seaforth.
This is what,. the Record said:
"Kristine Schmitt became
queen of the diaper set Monday
and greeted the honor with a
yawn and' a° look • of complete
indifference.
'The wide-eyed 'young beauty
(she'll be a year old in 15 days),
fiddled with a flower and ignor-
ed the baby - talk of photograph-
ers •after defeating 108 other
gurgling contestants for the
title of baby' of the year.
Her trium'ph'camelinthe:KrW
and District Labor Council ba-
by contest at the Kitchener au-
ditorium during opening day of
the Central Ontario Exhibition.
If Kristine wasn't excited by
it all, at least one of the men
aiming a camera -at her was.
He was her father, Karl Schmitt
of 207 Fifth Ave. •
Mr. Schmitt,, a foreman , at
K -W Frosted "Foods, admitted
he might -have been a little op-
timistic when he decided to
bring his camera along.
On the other hand, Mrs.
Schmitt, a former teacher, was-
n't so sure • that things would
turn out as they did for Kris-
tine. •
At first she hadn't thought it
such a good- idea to enter Kris-
tine in the contest. • .
"I had to convince my wife,"
said Mr. Schmitt as he bobbed
,up and down with his camera,
trying without much success to
get his only child, ••to look at
him. '
Kristine -wasn't in a mood for
smiling. Or far crying.
She was content -to sit on her
mother's lap and exarnine a
flower Mrs. Schmitt was wear-
ing." . .
