As there is only one Turnkey on duty between the•hours of 3 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., it is our recongmen- dation that two more full time Turnkeys be employed. We think this is a great need for the sane of the safety of the Turnkey in event of prisoner misbehaviour. At the time of our visitation there was only one prisoner who stated he was being well cared for and had no complaints or recommenda- tions We would suggest the. installation of a small air con- ditioning unit for summer use in the Turnkeys' Offices. In con- versation with the Turnkeys on duty, they stated ''their. satis- faction with working conditions, County Registry Office The County Registry Office is e well maintained office with ade quate storage space at the pre- sent. time. The: Board' owns one ambulance which is staffed and directed by the Administra- tor, with tile St. John's Ambu- lance vehicle as a reserve. piece of equipment. The Director of Nurses, Mrs. McLennan is in the process of upgrading the quality of pat- ient care, working towards the hospital obtaining its Seal of Accreditation.. This wefeel will be reached in a short time `un- der her able direction. An emergency generating un- it is available in times of emer- gencies. South Huron Hospital Exeter South Huron Hospital, Exe- ter, has 52 beds with occupan- cy of 90%. This is one of the most efficient home -like hos- pitals it has been our pleasure to visit. Clinton Public Hospital • Clinton Public Hospital is a 60 bed hospital working to cap- acity, Financing for future ex- pansion xpansion in this district is a problem. Adequate help throughout the hospital is re.'' quired, other than in the nurs- ing" -profession. There are two Surgeons with many _ active treatment cases handled every week. There is an older part used as a hospital which :was former- ly a house (47 years old), which is constantly settling, 'causing roofing' and inside plaster prob- lems. It is our opinion that this old portion should be replaced as 'soon as possible. As there is no ambulance service in Clinton, we recommend that the Hospi- tal ospitat Board look into the posaibili- ty of offering this service from the hospital with a trained per- sonnel. Seaforth Community' Hospital Seaforth Community Hospital was built in 1965 and is a very compact modern unit. This " is the kind of hospital that is re- quired in every community. Of the 45 beds, 75% to 80% are in use. Basic staff is very "effici- ent and happy in their sur- roundings. Two or three more nurses could be,psed•to advan- tage. The Administrator is to be commended on his. effort in es- tablishing a "Career Day" class of 10, from Grades •12 and le, of the local High School, until all who are interested have been acquainted with hospital procedure. Wingham & District Hospital Wingham and District Hospi- tal has 104 beds -running at ca• paeity. This institution has its first edition Provisional Seal towards its Accreditation Seal: An Isolation "Section- is jo be found in this ''hospital, one of the few in Western Ontario. The older section has been dis• mantled in the past year, giv- ing a modern hospital of -three recent additions. There is prov- ided a Nursing•Assistant's Train- ing Centre of 20 students per term which, graduates top assis- tants. Two hundred and eighty-three persons are employed all year round, 'providing top care_ for all patients. • fit is our opinion that these e community hospitals in Huron County provide a per- sonal eare to' the patients, which cannot be found in very large institutions of distant cities. Also, our recommendations would be that greater effort be put forth in finding ways and mans ,to help finance these local units. The local Boards are to be congratulated. for their time and effort devoted to the care of the needy and sick. The above three hospitals were inspected on Thursday, the 7th day of September, 1967.
