Is". A few years ago, few Ca-
nadians had heard of Afric-
ville. Then, thanks to televi-
sion everyone knew it was
our most squalid Negro -ghetto
Crouching at the landward
door of Halifax it carne com-
plete with tarpaper shacks,
backward schooling and large
impoverished families. But
things are changing for the
Negroes in Nova Scotia. • Af-
ricville will soon be only, a
tarnished memory the city
of Halifax and the provincial
department 6f public welfare
have helped most of its resi-
dents find better houses scat-
tered across the city. In the
relocation work women- vol-
unteers went right into the
houses of people who are., mo-
ving from a small, poor but
familiar community into the
unknown 'frightening city. In
many cases when the families
moved, church- volunteers
welcomed them- Into the com-
munity and into their church.
The church can play a 'large
part in chauging the attitudes
of the -public towards poverty
and discrimination.

The McKillop UCW Unit
met at the home of Mrs. Don-
ald Dennis Wednesday even-
ing.
Several old time hymns
were sung at the opening of
the meeting. Miss Ethel Den-
nis was pianist. Mrs. David
Watson presided for the De-
votions. A pd'em "What is a
Smile" Was read by Mrs. D.
Watson after which Mrs. Glens
McNichol led in prayer.

Watson, Mrs.William Leeming

Mrs. Watson gave a reading

Miss Tennie Dennis presid-

made to cater for a wedding

Anniversary services held last
Sunday. The theme for his
morning message was "The
Pursuit of Happiness" and in
the evening "Worship a Real-
ity" was the title of his `'ser-
mon. .
Miss Glenna Houston was
organist at both 'services' and
led the choir aa they render-
ed anthems, with Miss Sher -
ail and Graeme Craig as solo-
ists. Bouquets of flowers for-
med an appropriate setting
for the one hundred and se-
cond Anniversary in this Can-
ada's Centennial year..
The Women's Institute will
meet ' Wednesday' evening
when herb Freeman, Tesswat-

The Senior Citizens Club
met at the home .'of Mr. • and
Mrs. John Jefferson when Mrs.
Thomas Laing presided: Mrs.
Robert McCaughey presided
at the piano for a sing song.
Nineteen members answer-
ed the roll call by naming a
favorite flower. It was agreed,
that the meetings -be held in
the afternoon at 2 • p.m., the
next meeting falling on .Oc-
tober -12th with Thanksgiving
as the roll -call topic. Mrs.
Bowman and . Mrs. Parker
were named as a program
committee and Mrs. Wilbur
Miller and Mrs, Olive Speare
as lunch conveners.
Following a number of read-
ings euchre was played and
lunch served.
Mark Rally Day
Mrs. Allan Stewart of Lon-
don, conducted` the Rally Day
service on Sunday. The junior
choir led the.singing and sang
a special number, "The Beu-
tiful Garden of Prayer". Ma-
ny of the Sunday School pu-
pils received diplomas and
seals for regular attendance.
The acct of commissioning of
teachers and leaders was eon -
ducted by Mr. Stewart.
' ' Ladies Aid Meets
Miss Olive Speare was hos-
tess at a meeting of the Ladies
Aid when Mit. Gerald Carey
resided and read a poem, "It
is in your Face" following
with devotions. Twelve••inem-
bers answered the roll call
by naming an "Indian Tribe".
Reports were given by Mrs.
T. L. Scott. Readings were
given 'by Mrs. Charles Doug-
las. Mrs. T. L. Scott closed
the meeting with prayer.
Lunch was served by the
hostess assisted by Mrs. John
Miller and Mrs. John Temple-
man.
