An estimated 1,40". people
tool advantage Of an oaeil
house at the Silverereek raft
of. 14r. Ewart Wilson' to; view
one of the most modern `poultry
facilities b Western_ Ontario,
The open house was held in
conjunction with the opening
of Mr. Wilspn's new 40 by 240
foot, fully automated caged
layer house which is built ac-
cording to the most up-to-date
plans of the Ontario Agricul-
tural College. Mr. Wi15on: ex-
plained, "Being right beside the
park (Lions Park) I wanted the
best, nothing second rate that
would detract from the, park."
The big barn has a capacity
of 10,358 caged ' layers. The
birds are put in the cages when
they are 20 weeks old and
ready for immediate produc-
tion.
Everything in the ;barn Is
automatic. A conveyor brings
feed to all the cages. There is
an automatic water system. The
barn is cleaned by scraping lit-
ter into cross augers which
'carry it outside the west side
of the building where It is im-
mediately removed.
Eggs are easily gathered. An
endless belt transports the
eggs from the cages to .a plat-
form at the end of the row of
cages at the flick of a switch.
Eggs are then gathered and
stacked in cartons and immed-
iately taken to the cooler room.
• "This is the great advantage
(it the- system,' saki Mr. Wil-
son. "The ' greatest loss in eggs
is when the eggs must sit in a
hot building for nine or ten
hours. This way they get right
to the Miler in a short time
and have no chance to deterior-
ate in quality."
Mr. Wilson uses flat -deck
cages, four -rowa to eacl '%ank
and suspended from the ceil-
ing rather, than the stacked
cages used in many barns. •
The building is windowless.
Ventilation is provided by 18-'
inch electric fans. Lighting can
be dimmed to prevent cannibal -
Lighting, feed and water
systems are operated by a time
clock and tun only twelve iteurs
a day.
• The new industry is an addi-
tion to the steer raising opera-
tion Mr. Wilson now., has. He
plans to carry- on both in the
future,
• "The automation Mikes it
possible to go ahead with 'hath,.
Without it I. would have'to em-
ploy several men to care for,
this thauy hens." '
Another advantage in the
automatic system is the les-
sening of losses due to break-
age: The OAC estimated such
an egg gathering system will
pay for itself in two years
through prevention of breakage
alone.
Mr. Wilson is not a complete
stranger to the chicken busi-
ness ' although he has been
Away from it • for a while.. lie-
fore he moved to Seaforth. from
Dublin he had a Large flock of
hens. This was about 15 years
ago.
