St. Colum ban
Sunday afternoon•, will see the
opening of a new, modern St.
Columban Separate Sclibel,. the
fourth school in St. Columban.
The new ' school, officially
known as Separate School Un-
ion No. 2, Hibbert, Logaii and
McKillop replaces a smaller
two -room -school on the south
side of highway—No. 8 which
served the area from 1923 until
the building of the present
school.
The very first school to serve
St. Columban was built of logs.
No one knows the exact date i
was erected but it was used
until the middle part of the
188.0's. It was situated across
the road and to the east of the
St. Columban Church. Lumber
was used to board oyer the pri-,
ginal log walls and make the
school more suitable for win-
ter use. "
In the middle 1880's a new
school was built just east of
the church. This school was of
white brick construction with
one room. When a Larger school
was built it was renovated to
serve as a home for Mark Miles,
for many years caretaker of the
church and school. It was then
unused for many years before
being torn down to make room
for the new school that has
just been built.
The old one -room .school was
replaced in 1923 by a larger
two -room, red brick school. Trus-
tees when this school was built
were James O'Sullivan, Patrick
V. McGrath and Frank McQuaid.
The school was originally a:
public school but since only
Catholic chtldren attended it
was' changed to a separate
school. In 1951 a Separate
School Area was .formed. It was
made up of 'Union No. 1, McKil-
lop and Logan; Dublin No. 2;
Mien No. 3, McKillop and Hib•t°
bert; and Hibbert No. 4.
The neW school is a low, mod-
ern ,.building with four class-
rooms, an all-purpose play-
room, teacher's -room and of-
fices. One hundred and' eigh-
teen children are taught by the News Of.
