The first settrers 'to locate on the 14th concession- were two brothers, Lauchlin and Hugh McNeil. They chose Lots 16,-17 and: 18 on.the 14th con- cession of Grey in 1352. While walking to Gode>;ich to pay • for' their laird, they stayed at a stopping place along the way. They did not care ,for the 'apr pearance of these fleefdei Sp in- stead of, both going to bed, they took turns, one always. with his ear to the key Kole. They were, not mistaken, as later in the night more people arrived and they were about to be robbed: Both brothers departed :through an upstairs window and arrived safely at Goderich next day. Lauchlin built his buildings on Lot 17, married •Miss Sarah La- mont of Con., 8, Grey Twp. He was a lover of good horses, im- porting several from Scotland. Coming in the spring f 1853 John took up Lots 19 Ind 20 on the 14th' and George 19 and 20 on the 15th. John later sold Lot 20 to his. brother-in-law James McNair and George sold Lot 19, on 15, to Win. Fulton. John Shiels and Jessie McNair walked to Ifarpurhey to be married. They- had. heyhad a family of five sons .and two daughters. Thomas, James, John,, Robert and • William. Thomas ,farmed in . Saskatche- wan and William) Itved. un Brit- ish, Colufnbia: The other three remained at home. Jane and Annie never married: This farm was a Century Farm, passing from Mr. Shiels to James and Robert, then to John who own- ed it until passing away -in 1954. In 1854 Neil" McNair, his wife and' family arrived. They took up four Lots,, 21 and 22 on the 14th con, and Lots 21 and -22 on the '15th con. The build- ings were erected on Lot 22 on the 14th. A., Will hams) and their daughter Myra is the fifth generation to live on this century old farm. 1866 John V. Steiss-tnoved his family from Waterloo County near Heidelberg to Lot 18, con. 13 Grey. There was a family of sevensons, o ns Jacob, Louis, Adam, John, Robert; William and Dan- iel and two daughters, Lydia and Sophia. Jagob and William were. blacksmiths at Molesworth. Louis" was a tailor having a tail- or shop in Ayton and later at Cranbrook, Robert had 'a^ saw- mill• at Revelstoke,• B.C., John and Adain, were fartnerst, - and Daniel was a mail carrier, draw- ing mail out of Walton for years.Many. times Mr. Steiss walked to Heidelberg to visit relatives. His son Louis took over the farm, who in turn pas- sed it on to his son Alex. Last year Alex retired to Brussels, his son Stewart taking over the farm. In 1934 L nn Evans bought it, living there until 1944. His son Stewart 'owned it and -lived there until ,his death in 1958. Now his son Douglas and wife Jean with their daugh- ters Cynthia and Bonnie .own this farm and live on it. • Lots' 19 and 20 on the •13th con. were taken up by the Mc- Neil t?rothers, later selling it to Robert Scott. He had. a- family of two. sons- and °two -daughters: His sonskjack and Robert mar- ried Mary and Agnes McInnes. One-' daughter married. Andrew McInnes and the other a Mr. Acnes living. in Morris Twp. In 1.885 he sold -the farm to William McNabb of rvtcKillop Twp. He had a .-family of five sons and one daughter.- When he died in. 1909 his son Duncan took, over the place, selling it to James Knight- in 1903. Later his son Alfred and Walter bought the farm, selling it to Peter Lefor and moving to Brussels in 1957. Lot 17 con. 13 was taken up by a man named Fryfogel. Lat- er it was .sold to David Taylor, then to William Ziegler, Sr. His son Jacob took over the farm and married Miss' Marion Clark in• 1912.
