THE BIRDS AND .THE EWES
REAR bORIS 7-- I don't mean
to sound dumb or anything, but
what are petting and necking? la•
it right to -do them Or not?
You hear about . a lot. of kids
whodo them during shows and
other places.
Do our . parents really ears
whether we do it or not? I'd
ask my mother but I'm scared
to. •
Wondering
DEAR WONDERING - Neck-
ing and petting are love -making
in various forms of intensity.
Necking usually means light
kissing, hugging and cuddling;
petting involves more intimate
-kissing and -lingering .car-esses
A. few gentle kisses and hugs
. between friends are just .part
of growing up. But there's dan-
ger when the physical contact
is so intense and prolonged
that emotions are stimulated
beyond control.
This is what worries parents,
And the best way. to keep• . on
the safe side is to 'avoid long,
'lonely car rides, parking with a
.date; and any other situation
which makes uninterrupted
necking sessions easy.
DEAR DORIS - 1 do not
feel old. I am . z of quite 70 yet.
Last summer I 'applied 'for
swimming . lessons at • the'
Y.W.C.A., -
When I went for my first
lesson I told my daughter. She
thought I was really ,pff my
head and tried to persuade .me
to stop. I've been terrified of
water most of my life, yet al-
ways have' wished I could swim.
They will neverknow what
mother did go through in those
first Iessons...I never would
have gone through with it had
:it not been for the encourage-
ment of a most wonderful in-
structor. My doctor says .it .has
already helped my arthritis
and I° myself know it has.
Would' so like to have a little
encouragement in doing things
I -d like and not just going to
teas or playing cards.
-.,. Three„$$ore,,And_ Ten
DEAR 'THREESCORE' ETC.
- Consider yourself encour-
aged. There is no better thera-
py for arthritis than swimming
- as you have discovered.
Sometimes the. slightly youn-
ger generation wants to wrap
those who, raised it in cotton
wool and stow them away..But
the world is so full of • a num-
ber of things. . . . ! And "a
couzi`ageous,' gal like you can
tackle plenty of them.
You'll Iive longer and enjoy
every minute. if you keep in
the swim as -it were.
DEAR DORIS - I. do not
agree,;with slapping, yet I read
where a doctor said children
who never get slapped may get
the idea their parents don't
love them. Usually what they
need is,' an explanation of
things.
"I looked on my children as
a part of myself and 1 know I
would rebel at being slapped
for my lack of knowledge. If
there was .danger' in 'what they
didI Would talk to them about
it. They were never slapped -
We, enjoyed our children.
Now that they have their own
'homes they still like to come
home whenever they can. Slap-
ping as one grows may lead to
violence , in' uncontrolled 'tem=
per.

DEAR OVER EIGHTY -
Conversation and explanation
beats slapping or spanking. Far
easier on everybody's nerves,
too. And ` I'd agree that dis-
plays of temper set a poor
example.
But what the doctor must
have meant was that being al-
lowed to get away with murder
makes a child• think nobody
cares two hoots what he does.
One thing is certain, and that
is that too Many slaps or body
blows make such punishment
loose all meaning: Any child re-
sents them after a while.
To Older Than He Is It
Isn't 'a thing to generalize
about. I know some 'mighty
happy marriages'in which the
lady is the man's senior .by
several years. Six is not so
many, if you are both healthy,
vital people.
Your boy friend has already
accepted the idea. So can you.
And here's a happy thought:
'he`4oflds are that a wife will
outlive her husband, since wo-
men live longer, on the aver-
age, than men. By marrying a
man younger than you are,
then, you decrease your years
of widowhood!
