In her report, the. adMinistra-
tor, Miss V. T. Drope, said that
the hospital serves an area with
an estimated population of
9,000. Admissions during the
year totalled 1,215. The average
length of stay of active patients
was 12.5 days.
Services in all departments
had increased, particularly in
the " out patient -department,
where admissions were up from
-999 to 1,584 in 1966. The 'pay-
roll 'for the year amounted, to
$2131,200.
Miss Drepe referred tothesimilarity between a hospital
and a community,•She said that
at ODA and, the _same,_ time ..the
hospital was a hotel, a restaur-
ant, a pharmacy, a laboratory
nd provided 'as well engineering
and emergency service facilities.
It included administration,
housekeeping, -nursing services
and radiology. She emphasized
that all these services must be
maintained at full capacity on
a 24-hqur basin.
Dr. Edmund Malkus, presi-
dent of the medical staff, said
that the 'staff met regularly in
an effort . to better the services
being provided the patients. He
said that every effort was being
made that would result in the
hospital becoming accredited
and that this involved a number
of changes in routine and addi-
tional records but was well
worth while since it could re-
sult in a higher standard of pat
ient care.
Discharge Procedure
The meeting discussed - in
some detail the admission and
discharge proceedure and Dr.
Malkus pointed out decisions as
to discharge were made by the
admission_._.and discharge coxn',
mittee representing atl the med-
ical staff. The chairman in ans-
wer bp a question said that the
board or staff could' net • dis-
charge a patient and that this
could only be done by the medi-
cal staff. Ontario Hospital Ser-
vices Commission' policy was.
directed towards making high
cost active treatment beds avail-
able to the greatest number of
patients and as a result there
was no alternative but to dis-
charge patients once the Medi-
cal •staff was satisfied! that re-
covery had reached the point
where the active treatment fa-
cilities were no longer neces-
sary.•
