"Siie started the whole thing, and we 4,4ejjd on her so much new,'. says Mrs. iryan, also on the association executive, But the Qutward going Mrs. Langley displays a- modesty un- fitting of her dynamic charac- ter. "You', Shouldn't be reward- ed for Something you enjoy do- ing" she states. And enjoy it she does. Every school day, now that the school is economically sound enough to hire teachers, Mrs. LangIey"toils at the work- shop which .she started last year in Knox Church, basement. With her five charges she tries to "iron out their faults and make them socially accep- table" --a difficult job when you consider the unwarranted stigma which goes with the label mentally retarded- .................... To do this she makes con- tacts with industry, small busi- ness and just about anybody who has hand jobs they find - hard to get done, But she has lots of contacts. In 1959, when she was in the middle of her six years as president of the association, un- der her direction, $15,000- was raised in three weeks to buy the old Faith Bible Church on Erie ;St. This • was . the first Portia School. Since then, the new $100,000 plus Portia School, not yet of- ficially opened, has been con- structed. Mrs. Langley had a big part in that. Andevery day, she helps her charges at the workshop, now in the old school. Her secret — "a less personal attitude to the children," she says. Born in Seaforth, she moved to Strat- ford in`192*.. Since then, she has been ac- tive in home and school, and for tWa years served on the city recreation committee. Her husband works at. the CNR roundhouse, her daughter is a nurse in London, and a son is at home. DORIS advice from Doris Clark ST -ILL IN LOVE BEAR DORIS — About a month ago my boy friend (17), whom I will call D,, and I 'broke up. I am 18. We loved each other very much (or what we thought was love). • When he said, he_ didn't., want to go steady any more, I agreed that we would still be friends. But he is now going with another girl. She has one of the worst reputations in the school. She gives herself away to boys, if -you=-know-what ,-Lmean.'- She has long black hair, which she combs so it covers half her face. , She also wears cakes of make-up and white lip , stick, and her skirts are so s`hori she may, as well not wear one. I heard, from a few kids at school that he is going with this girl just •to make me jeal- ous. D. and I both come from respectable families. Should I try to get him back? Still In Love With, Him, But Trying To Hide It DEAR R S.I.L.W.H.B.T.T-H.,. — Don't kid yourselfthat a boy will spend evening after eve- ning with another girl just in the hope that someone he has deliberately broken off with will be jealous. D. goes . out with White Lips because she fits his present mood. Here's your chance to broad- en your outlook and play the field. Forget that all -embracing word "love',' • fbr a while. Want my leaflet on the siib ject? , DEAR DORIS My mother and father will be married) 5Q ' years in March and because of their poor health it will be int - possible for us to have .a large celebration. As we are a small family and all situated over 100 miles from "home," could you suggest how we could plan a happy day for them when it may be impossible for us to get there? Also, would it be ethical for me to write and remind cousins and aunts ab -out the up -coming anniversary? I do not want to solicit gifts for ,my parents, but feel a card or letter to them would be appreciated. Daughter and Son ' DEAR DAUGHTER AND SON Much can 'be done by just taking a little thought. (1) Fifty years ofwedded bliss are worth a picture and story in the local newspaper, Write to the editor yourself: (2) Send personal notes to their old and treasured friends; say you are planning a card shower for your parents, • as a andGola that aen e card ornote celebrations; tfrom, ,them would be prized. Confidential t4 Tempted — There's nothing abnormal about being tempted: Everybody has wrong impulses. Just how well you handle .them determines the kind of person, you are. A Chrn- ese proverb says;: You can't stop birds from flying 'over your head, but ytiu can prevent them from building nests in your hair! DEAR DORIS — Is it proper at a small wedding for the girl standing. up, with the bride to wear the same color suit as the bride?
