To Hold
World Day
of Prayer
When the. World Day of
Prayer is held on Friday after-
noon of than week in ,lglnnndd
villa Church. those attending
will be taking in a service in
which it' is expected Canadian
women in more than: 3,5Q9, com-
munities from Newfoundland to
the ° Yukon will participate.
They will use a service pngpar-
ed by the late Queen Salote of
Tonga, a dedicated Christian,
who for many years led her own
people in this annual observ-
ance. As has been customary in
recent years, the first of the
day's gatherings will be held at
dawn in the South Pacific's Ton-
ga Islands, moving westward
with the advancing sun until
prayers for peace and under-
standing have , literally circled
the globe. The Egmondville ser-
vice begins at 3 p.m. when Mrs.
0. Struthers of Mitchell will
speak. Women of the area are
invited to attend.
Though the Day of Prayer be-
gan in the United States as
early as 1887 and in Canada in
1895, its spread around the
world has'been something of a
modern miracle. It just seems.
to have "caught on" like simi-
lar movements in a .number of
countries.
While intercession is the cen-
tral idea of the World Day of
Prayer, offerings are also sub-
stantial. In Canada gifts amount-
ed to more than .$75,000.00 in
1966. This money was used for
the publication and distribution
of Christian literature, refugee
work and other •concerns
throughout the world.
