LONESOME AND SCARED
DEAR DORIS - We have
four children. My husband is
home on week ends only. Most
weeks, I do not see a soul ex-
cept the kids, as we are in the
country.
When it is nice out I don't
mind staying alone even if it
does get lonesome. But, oh, if it
gets stormy I am terrified. I
just can't think straight. Every-
one thinks I'rn being• stupid,
especially my parents.
When my husband is home I
don't mind because he seems to
understand and I feel safe. He
told me that if I Wanted, he
would move us to town near his
work.- But we would have to
pay rent when we own our own
house here. It would also mean
Moving the kids to an English
school. They speak no English
and are in French classes here.
Here we are home. Everyone
is good to us. If they could"only
understand my problem and
help me in some wax!
Scared
DEAR SCARED - Could it
be you have misplaced your
fear of loneliness onto storms?
Being alone so much. summons
all your courage, though you
brush it off and assure folks
you are b.k.
"And then the rains came!''
The tensions yqu have subdued
boil over; the storm takes the
blame.
We don't want the kids to
grow up fearful, do we? I'd
suggest either: (1) Finding a
new, sociable interest •to get
you out of the house at least
once a week with a babysitter
in; or (2) a move into town for
the. next six months, .on a trial
basis,
Could you conceivably rent
where .you ' -are to somebody like
the rural school teacher,. fvhile
you try out a new arrange-
ment? , •

and he's a bachelor. He lives
with his parents, but spends
most of his time at our house.
My husband is getting tired of
his company but is the type of
person who won't say anything
to him but will complain to me.
Now this so-called friend has
told me he Ioves me, which I've
ignored, and • made passes,
which I've told him off for
quite rudely, I'm sure my bus -
band suspects what his feelings
are toward me but he's wait-
ing for me to do something.
What should I do?
I haven't given him any rea-
son to do this, as he has seen
how close my husband and I
are. What upsets me most is
he'lI play up to me right in
front of my husband and my
husband will only laugh it off.
I'vetold him off time and time
again,
Unwilling Hostess
DEAR UNWILLING If
you have to pin your husband,
down and 'sit on his chest, make
him listen to you seriously.
This time he has to pay .at-
tention; his pal is 'betraying his
friendship and making love to
his wife. 'Is he a man or a
mouse? Show him this column.
DEAR DORIS I have nev-
er been out on a date ..in, all my
life. I'd like to play the field, a
you suggest, but I think that if
a boy I Liked ever asked me to
go steady I would jump at„the
chance.
Once I went home from a
dance with a really' nice boy
and I was so happy about it.
Then this girl came along who
liked him, and she just Stepped
in and took him over. I didn't
have the nerve• to do the kind
Of -things she did (like wait out-
side his ear for a ride home
from school).
'Sixteen And Depressed
DEAR SIXTEEN 'Thou-
sands of Sweet Sixteens across
Canada would fall through the
floor rather than stand beside a
boy's:car,.hinting for a ride.
Soon you won't have to. As
boys grow up they get choosier.
Then they take another look at
the girl with a little manners
and modesty. •
I'm sending you my IeafIet
"Are You Really Growing Up?"
which offers some grooming
and sprucing up ideas. Friendli-
ness, genuine kindness, no
stooping to pull another gal
apart - those are the things
that win.
(Note to Readers: • The leaflet
"Are You Really Growing Up?"
may be had by writing in for it,
enclosing 10 cents and a stamp-
ed; self-addressed envelope.)
