McLean; Area convention, Mrs. Gordon Pap- pie; It was decided "to make a Christmas donation • to the.' Children's Aid. The program was in charge of Mrs. A. Pepper and Mrs. W. Haugh. Roll • Call was an- swered by telling "Something I have learned from another countrywoman". Instrument- als were given by Mrs. J. Mc- Gregor and Mrs. E. Cameron. The motto "He who sows cour- tesy reaps kindness and he who plants kindness gathers loye" was given by Mrs. W. Haugh. Mrg': Haugh told of people whose lives showed examples of the motto sug- gesting "a sympathetic ear is St. Nicholas And Many Other Santas Long before Santa trav- eled by sleigh, St. Nicholas, special guardian of chil- dren, set forth on foot, or rode by horse or donkey, to brig gifts to European, homes. The good saint's day is December 6th, and "on the eve ' of his festival day", writes an Encyclopedia Americana authority, "St. Nicholas makes his tour, visiting palace and cottage. "The children place re- ceptacles for the gifts, which St. Nicholas is ex- pected to let fall down the chimney. . Sometimes shoes are neatly polished for the purpose, at other times plates, or baskets, or stockings, or specially shoes of porcelain. 'St. Nicholas' steed -- is not forgotten. For him the children put water and hay, or carrot or potato peeling, or a piece of bread in the shoe, or basket, or stock- ing. "In the morning from the tipped -over chairs and gen- eral disarray in the room it is evident that St. Nich- olas has been present. "Replacing the oats, or hay, or carrot are found sweets and playthings for children who have been good. For bad children, rods are ,left; and the fodder is untouched." Though Santa Claus is today's most popular Christmas gifts giver, he still has plenty of help. In Northern Europe, many children await the arrival of St. Nicholas; on the Eve of December 5th. In Spain and Latin Amer- ica, the "Three Kings'i traditionally bring gifts on Epiphany Eve, January 5th. worth a ton of tranquillizers". Flags of the United Nations were displayed and comments on some of the flags were giv- en by Mrs. D. Coleman. The number of member states at t4e United Nations Is 104. Mrs. A. Pepper read a poem she composed on "Remember- ing". Courtesy remarks were given by Mrs, James '1 eyes. The Institute members are invited to attend the Summ- ary Day of "Hats For You" to be held Friday, December 2, at the Legion Hall, Clinton. nn„n ono npr nAri^ ,, ..
