The president, Mrs. • Thomas Butters, welcomed the guests, amorlg whom were many who had had an active part in the organization of the branch as well as former members of the past ten years. Roll call was answered by present members telling why they belonged to the Women's Institute. ' During the business meetin members were reminded of thn ar"ea;-convention to be held in Goderich on November 1st and 2nd. Mrs. John Burchill present- ed a short resume of the reso- lutions to be presented at the convention. Plans were made for the next card party held at the home of Mrs. John Bur- chill. Mrs. R. S. Mrs. Joseph -Looby, the first secretary of the branch; read the minutes of the organization, al meeting, held at the home of Mrs. Harold Pethick, on April 11, 1056, and also gave the names of the first executive. Mrs. George Wilson, RR 6, St. Marys and Mrs. Clarence Switzer of Kirkton, who had been present at the first meet- ing, spoke briefly, Others who had helped at that time .and who also spoke were Mrs. E. Gettler,' •'Pfillarton; Mrs. W. Kentsch and Mrs. Norman Coulthard 'of:St: Paul's; Mrs. "'N!: Whetham of Clinton and Mrs. John Nagle of Dublin, the first president. Mrs. Stuart Shier brought greetings from South Perth District and - greetings from the area were brought by Mrs. Gettler, Mrs. Carter Kers- lake, president of Staffa Wo- men's Institute brought greet- ings from their branch. The "In Memorium" service was conducted by Mrs. Charles Friend and IVlrs. Harold Peth- ick. As Mrs. Friend played a soft piano accompaniment by Fleming, Mrs. Pethick read a hymn by John Greenleaf Whit- tier, then placed fourwhite roses in a basket of wine -red chrysanthemums, in memory of four former members: Mrs. Joseph Atkinson, Mrs. E. Brux- er, Mrs. Thomas Molyneux and Mrs„ A. Whetham, Sr. Mrs. William Smith introduc- ed the guest speaker, Miss Bes- -SCHOOL NEWS Football Last Thursday, Stratford Cen- tral played'against the Seaforth' Golden, Bears in Seaforth. Lar- ry Lane scored the touchdown for Seaforth but Stratford mov- ed up and won the game with a score of 7-6.. Campaigns The chocolate bar campaign which has been on the move for the last month is being brought to a close this week. do Monday the yearly maga- zine campaign got underway. At a special assembly on Mon- day the details of the campaign were given to the student body. Glee Club The Glee. Club under 'h leadership of Nancy Berger had 'their first'practice last week. News of Cromarty The Thankoffering meeting of the Marian Ritchie Evening Auxiliary was held in the church school room .with mem- bers of the Women's Missionary Society as guests. Mrs. Robert Laing presided and opened the meeting by quoting a portion of the one' hundredth Psalm, fol- lowed with a hymn and scrip- ture reading and' meditation by Mrs. Sam McCurdy. Mrs. John Templeman led in prayer. The -topic ."Lest We Forget'? was ably presented by Mrs. Charles Douglas. The offering was received by Mrs. Harper. and Mrs. N. Har- burn. Mrs. Fryfogei of North Eastliope, who is presbyterial secretary of the Evening de- partment was guest speaker and gave an inspiring account of her work. She was thanked by Mrs. Mervin Dow. The secretary, Mrs. Charles' Douglas Lead minutes and =the' president, Mrs. John Miler con- s. ducted business. The Presbyterial Literature secretary, Mrs. Paddington of Stratford was present and showed a fine display of liter- ature and study helps. Her work—is in one of the cottages making quilts. Among the. slides de- p;cting all aspects of 'pioneer life are some of Miss Keefer. and Mrs. M. Overton, who wds also present, with many of the quilts which they have com- pleted. The slides included in- terior and exterior views of most of the buildings in the village. Among the pioneer ac- tivities ctivities shown was the complete process of making linen from the growing of the flax, to the weaving of the finished article. Mrs. Charles Friend thanked Miss Keefer. • At the conclusion of the meeting guests served them- selves at a. turkey and salad buffet supper. The tables were decorated with gold candles, gold chrysanthe:nin s and blue delphinium floral arrangements. Mrs. Thomas Butter's, assisted by former presidents, Mrs. J. Nagle, Mrs.,Harold Pethick, Mrs. R. S. ikens, Mrs. M. Whetham and Mrs. J. Burchill, lit the candles on the anniver- sary cake. The committee in' charge were: decorations, Mrs. Joseph Dorsey, Mrs. J. NAME OFFICERS ' The organization meeting of the McKillop Cooking Club Opened with Mary Lou Murray handing out papers for 4-H record books. ' Historical Society Mrs. Wilfred Mack, president of Huron County Historical So- ciety, chaired the final open meeting of 1966 at Usborne Cen- tral School. A -comprehensive history of Usborne Township was read by Mrs. Theron Creery. Mrs. Philip Johns played'a med- ley of old time favorites. John W. Smith formerly of the R.C.A. and now of London, was guest speaker. His stories of life it1 Whitehorse, Yukon and on the fat Attic coast, were well illustrated by pictures and a film. Elimville and Hurondale Women's Institutes displayed Tweedsmuir Histories ' and. a collection of relics. Northside UCW Meets The Autumn ' Thankoffering meeting of Northside UCW was held on Tuesday night in the church school room.,Guests were present from Constance and Winthrop. The devotional operling was conducted by Mrs. Somers and Mrs. Mcllwain. A duet was sung by the Sedley sisters and Mrs. Gordon Mc- Kenzie introduced a skit called "Encounter pUt on by Mrs, Peter Dunlop and Mrs. John Turnbull. The guest speaker, Mrs. Fletcher from Exeter was introduced by Mrs. Harold Par- sons. Mrs. 'Fletcher's. talk Was -ori "Tensions of " 1966'. Mrs. George Ribey thanked the speaker. Mrs. William Ball,. the UCW president conducted the business and welcomed the guests. She said reports would indicate the purpose and ser- vice of the UCW, Mrs. E. Wil- liams gave the community friendship report. Mrs. Knight reported onthe boxes and re- membrances sent to the sick and shut in folks. Mrs. Gar Bak- er reported • on the young groups and listed the leaders and officers in each.
