PreSent Day Missionary
$tresses Specialized Skills
(A story in last week's issue
of The Expositor told of the
work James McNairn, of S,ea-
forth, was doing in India, The
Toronto Star in a recent issue
told the story in these words):
Jim McNaieris one of a new
mutation among missionaries.
He recently went to India un-
der the auspices of the United
Church or 'Canada - not to
preach, but to drill wells.
As an experienced well -drill-
er, Mr. McNairn's skill •was
needed in Indore, Central In-
dia, which has been plagued by
an acute water shortage. -
He will be there for three to
six months, training Indian
workers in modern well -drilling
techniques. Then he will re-
turn home to Seaforth, Ont., to
resume 'his normal life.
Mr. 1VIcNairn is one of an as-
sortment of "short-term work-
ers" shipped overseas by the
United Church - persons with
specialized skills to meet a
special need.
The church has ,.also, sent a
auto Mechanic to Nepa_ (he's
the only one in that isolated
Himalayan kingdom), a ceram-
ics expert to India, a chicken
farmer and agronomist to Bra-
zil, and a busiPiess administra-
tor to a hospital in Zambia.
Not New Idea
Rev. James Ormiston, person-
nel director of the United
Church's hoard of overseas mis-
sions, says that the job of the
short-term worker in the mis-
sion field has been "much more
highlighted in the last five
years," but he denies that it
is a radically new parture in
missionary philosophy.
"Go back as far as you like
in mission history and you will
'find the same sort br thing,"
he said.
"Many years ago, the church-
es sent builders to China and
they built seven great Christian
universities there.
"In receot, years, however,
more and more workers' ark
needed who will go' 'overseas
for relatively short 'terms to do
.specialized jpbs,"
tIr. Ormiston denies that the
short-term worker's Job, is pure-
DEAR DORIS
advice from

Mother At School
DEAR DORIS-I have a won-
derful husband an oaby a
year and a half. And I want
to go back....to school. I have
always. regretted never finisb-
ingh high school and getting a
vocation. What if I just had to
find work, at some later time?
There is an older woman who
would come to live with us and
take care of Timmie for the 10
months. However, if my ab-
sence every day would have a
harmful effect on him 'I would
not consider it. I could never
live with the fact that I had
failed him to satisfy my dream.
Wants Education
"- DEAR -WANT..- T1Th de-
pends on (1) the kind of moth
er-substitute your older --woman
would be (2) whether you could
give all necessary spare time
to Timmie, :when you are home;
and (3) holk well your constitu-
tion could stand up to the tri-
ple threat of homemaking,
mothering and studying:,
I have seen small children
react desperately to the loss of
their mother through absence
-at work or school. I have' seen
them develop skin rashes or be-
come silent and • withdrawn:
Such a lack in early life can
do lasting damage to a tender,
budding personality.

DEAR DORIS-I'd like to be
a social worker because I am
very interested in doing things
to help people. But now mother
says ,this takes a university edu-
cation. Is that right?
Loves People
DEAR LOVES-'Fraid sp. Six
years, to be exact. But for the
girl or boy who finds people
more exciting than anybody,
every- minute is worth it.
You learn what makes people
tick; and how to help them ad-
just their works (and personal-
-ity)-te•-the-tempo--(and•-temper)
of life around them. Quite an
assignment!

Social Work the Career For
You?".
ly technical and non -theologi-
cal. This kind Of practical help,
he says, is a genuine expres-
sion of Christian commitment
and the church's missionary Fe"
sponsibility.
'Basic Christian'
The worker, even if he is go-
ing to teach woodworking and
will do no preaching at all,
must have •"a basic Christian
orientation," said Mr. Ormis-
ton.
"What we look for especial-
ly is a high score in adaptabil-
ity -the skill of getting along
with others.
"There is no creedal exam-
ination involved, but we never
would send a conscious agnos-
tic, for instance. The person
must not be unsympathetic' to
what the church represents."
In point of fact, .yirtually all
the short-term workers are re-
cruited from" the ranks of faith-
jul
They go for varying periods
otoervice.
'Torn Haggart, who opened
the .service station in Nepal,
is there /for ,from three to five
years. This' • is the usual term.
His ',wife "and family are with
him.
No Distinction
The pay is between $4,000
and $5,000 a year, depending
on the size of the worker's
family. No distinction in sal-
ary is made between a physi-
cian and a pig farmer.
-Now, the elluicir needs teach-
ers of English (for, the West
Indies; India, Latin America,
Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and
Nepal), someone to teach indus-
trial arts in Hong Kong, and
doctors for seven hospitals in
Asia and Africa.
"Increasingly," said Mr. Orm-
iston, "there is a place for lay-
men on the frontiers of mis-
sionary service."
TO BACKWARD ABOUT
COMING FORWARD -Go ahead.
Speak first, when you meet him
on the street. Any gentleman
waits for the lady • to acknow-
ledge him before he preStimes
on acquaintanceship. (And let
me whisper in your , ear that
your Bobbie is shy, but will
gradually gain more poise it
you help him!)

ifation now onerting in sev-
eralt American cit es to prevent

should be a continuing dialogue
between science and religion so
that each May help the other
in the solving of human prob-
lems. I'm glad they have both
helped, you.,
Happy Day
DEAR HAPPY DAY - Bury
the hatchet. Youll make more
hard feelings by excluding him
than he will 'with his impert-
inence. Have his girl 'friend
put him on his best behavior
-or else! .
DEAR DORIS-My husband
has been asked to be church
warden and feels honored. I'm
pleased, too, but the trouble is,
I am the volUnteer church sec-
retary. Won't it look like a
clique?
I feel I should resign. People
use every excuse possible to
stay away from church. There
must be someone else who
could take on my work for a
few hours every week, even
though many Are working moth-
ers, and many more just can't
type or handle office work.
