Britton opened the meeting with 0 Cana, cia, the Ode and Marjr Stewart Collect. The roll call was answered by reading a short Christmas leg- end or poem. The story of the poinsettia, a poem on candy canes and the Christmas wreath were some of the ones given. Each member also gave a gift to the Children's Shelter. Min- utes were read by the secretary Mrs. J. Statton and the treasur- er's report was given by Mrs. R. Burchill. Mrs. T. Butters gave an ac- count of the fall banquet held at Staffa and Mrs. C. Friend read a Christmas story, "Often . heard but Seldom told". It took place in the City of Philadelphia at the old church of Holy Trini- ty when the organist, Lewis H. Redner was idly meditating over the keys of the organ. Across from him, dressed in clerical garb was Phillips Brooks. Brooks raised his head from his reading. "Lewis I like • those bars. Wouldn't it be mar- vellous if we could have a new Christmas hymn for our child- ren to sing on Christmas morn- ing." After several visits to Bethlehem, his thoughts and emotions were so impressed that he composed the hymn, "0 Little Town of Bethlehem". It was sung for the first time in 1268 on the old Rittenhouse cqtrre in Philadelphia. Mrs. R. Aikens and Mrs. Friend will demonstrate baking with yeast. The next project for the 4-H girls will be the third meal. Mrs. H. Pethick read a clipping from the "Western On- tario Farmer". A weekly fea- ture of the family section is a spotlight on women. One of the members, Mrs. R. S. Aikens ap- peared in the November issue. A full account was given of her hobbies, quilting, rug making, plant and flower growing and her never ending help to our Institute and the community.
