your telephone manager
Somehow the last few days just before Christmas of-
ten turn out to be the busiest of the year. W1;t 6 with children
home on holidays, pre -Christmas entertain" and the in-
evitable delays caused by winter weather, you y find your
telephone an indispensable step -saver. It can help you order
things for the house, find out which store has what you
want, keep tabs on the youngsters' whereabouts, plan and
schedule the family's holiday activities. And, for a break in
a busy day, what's more pleasant than taking time out for
a telephone chat with a friend across town — maybe share
a few Christmas decorating tips in the bargain.
So keep your telephone in mind when you're planning
how best to get everything done by December 25.
While a heavy snowfall may create a winter scene to
equal any you'll find on a Christmas card, it's best appreciat-
ed if you happen to be indoors curled up in front of the fire-
place. If you're outside, you'll be too busy coping with icy
roads and sidewalks, blinding snow, sleet and treacherous
driving conditions to enjoy fully the splendor all around you.
Whether on foot or in a car, winter weather requires
caution when moving about outdoors. But for the motorist it's
particularly hazardous. Here are a few reminders for safe
motoring that many experienced drivers follow. Keep your
car in top mechanical order. Drive smoothly, avoiding sud-
den stops, starts and abrupt turns. Keep more than the usyal
distance between your car and the vehicle ahead. "Pump"
brakes lightly on icy or wet streets to bring your car to a
gradual stop. If you should skid, let up on the gas pedal and
steer into the skid. Watch for thawing ice — you need twice
as much stopping distance on slush as on glare ice. Turn
your headlights on low beam during a snow storm or fog.
Watch for Icy patches on streets and frosty bridge floors.
Keep windows clear and clean and, above all, slow down.
Have you ever wondered why th'is Vord Christmas is
sometimes written Xmas? The "X" in Xmas\ is the Greek let-
ter "chi" — written X — and "chi" is the initial letter of
the Greek word for Christ.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
rT,T,
WISHING AND WAITING
DEAR DORIS — I retally love
a man 26, although I am just
15. He has now asked me if
I would marry him if he could
get a legal separation. '
His wife runs around and he
has two children. Would it be
right for us to marry, as I am
not yet pregnant?
Thinking It Over
DEAR THINKING — If you
are really thinking, kb will oc-
cur to you that a separation is
not a divorce. I'll add that you
are far too young and that preg-
nancy is not the right reason
far marrying anyone, even if he
were free.
If you want any more, rd say
this grown up married Man is
half a generation away from
you in thought, interests and
experience; and a Scoundrel for
taking advantage of you.
Run, don't walk, in the op-
povite direction
DEAR DORIS — Slowly but
surely, my husband and I are
building a house. It's a ranch
style, big enough for ,all six of
