DEAR.:. DQRIS
advice from
Doris Clar
HE'S -A BACK STABAR •
DEAR DORIS —I When the
manag6 of this store hired' me
he said, "I don't know what it
is but we just can't seem, to
keep a girl in our office." I
soon found Ont. I just could
not get along with the office
boss; he was so hateful to work
for.
Four months later. he said
he -was going to fire me if I did
not work any faster; sorather
than be fired. I quit
I have tried all over. town
looking. for work, for six
months; but I was beat before
I started because when asked.
I gave ..the name of my pre-
vious employer for a recom-
mendation, and I did not get
any. -
Stymied
DEAR STYMIED, --' It isn't
fair. Even if an employee were
to be, at fault, once, a single
Reference from an offended
employer shouldn't have the
power to preYent all further
. progress.
Something or somebody has
to counteract Old .Hateful's in-
fluence. I'd suggest you ap-
proach a. respected citizen who
knows ' you and your family
well for a character reference.
Your Minister or doctor, or a
teacher who helped you over
some of the tough,spots, might
be the one to do it.
And here's a cheerful
,thought: Sooner or later such
an office boss gets .his own
reputation for being ' a porn.
person to work for; and other
employers take what he says
with a grain of salt.
DEAR DORIS — These days
nearly everybody goes steady
at 13 or '14. It' s not really
tying yourself down to a guy.
,Well, it is, but put it this way:
If you don't then you sort of
swtch hands to often.
Every guy you go out with
will try for a kris, and after
dating three or four beys you
have a.reputation of being easy
to get something out of. •
I can see your point of view
0 but if you were our age I am
definite you viiould see it this
way because I have seen all my
girl friends switch hands and
get "easy pickings" reputa-
tions. No amount of persuasion
would change my mind or any
ethers.

ing a dote means "yes" to a
kiss? or more? T can see dat-
ing one fellow several tinies:
but I'd like to ,think our girls
were parficular about how soon
and to \atom they permitted
ca_res-es — of any kind!
It's the going steady that is
almost like an engagement that
I object to. Happens, I hope, a
little later tha.n 14.
Any other Concerned's like
to put in five cent's worth?
DEAR DORIS — Whereenee
have c iteny or when w •
visiting. • don't have anyth g
to say. Whenever semeon di,
reels a question to me, I often
fail to grasp e the meaning of it.
Other tithes I answer without
thinking, then 1 worey if I said
the right thing.
When I say something, it
comes out, awkwardly most of
Ihe time. I* think of a . better
way- to say it but it is too late
then.
Embarrassed Andy
DEAR ANDY — And' the
more you worry, the less you
know What to say! But don't
we, all? Almost anyone can.
think of an ,occasion when
words felled him. Then the ex-
actly -right sen t e n ce comes
crystal clear, say in the middle
of the night,- when he lies
awake thinking v about his so-
cial failure.
Perhaps the best answer is
to grow"some brand new habits
of concentration of a special,
kind. Concentrate on how the
oth:er person is thinking; how
he feels; and, devote yourself
to putting him at ease.
This calls for excereisieg both
imagination and sociability.
And self -forgetfulness (the op-
posite to the real culprit, self-
consciousness).
