Lots of Entertainment for All
• Travelling lecturers a n d
musical artists did one night
stands in various Seaforth halls,
which are always reported in
The Expositor as being w e 1 I
attended. Lecture topics ranged"
from "Popular Phrenology" to
"The Origin of the Species".
About one lecturer, who w a s
harangueing his audience with
anti -Popery sentiments The
Expositor comments "we have
no sympathy whatsoever with
bigots of any kind".
Poli,tical meetings -- which
appear quite similar to teday's
protest meetings, were h el d
whenever the local populace'
was incensed about matters of
government. In April of 1870
The Expositor carries the news
of an 'indignation meeting" of
Seaforth citizens held in Sharp's
Hall. The meeting endorsed a
petition to the Dominion govern-
ment in Ottawa. The petition's
purpose voas "to express o u r
abhorrence of the cold blooded
murder of a British subject on
British soil by the traitor Riel
and his minions".
For those 'early citizen's who
didn't like formal political
meetings, informal gatherings
were heldnightly at each o t
Seaforth's 13 hotels.
Church socials provided 4
different type of entertainment
with readings, recitations and
musical selections from meth-
bers who were amateur perform-
ers. The Expositor reviews all
of these concerts in great de-
tail and always encourages am-
ateur efforts.
Early issues of the paper
make note of a 'soiree" at the
Town Hall featuring a " grab-
bag" type of entertainment and
a "social" in Mr. O. C. Wilson's
Music Rooms".
YEARS
It began in the 60's (the 1860's
that is) when Robert Lumsden
established a drug store to serve
the Seaforth _Community.
Following a policy of service
and satisfaction the business
prospered and within a few
years became Lumsden and Wil-
son when Alexander WilsOn, a
Seaforth native joined it.
. Still later on the retirement of
Ntr, Lumsden, Mr. Wilson took
„
over the business which he car-
ried on until 1916 when it was
sold to E. thnbach.
Then in 1923 J. E. Keating
came to Seaforth and now for
45 years Keating's Pharmacy
has served anT ver increasing
clientele. Since the death of Mr.
Keating in 1967 'his daughter,
Mrs. D. L. Hoover, who had been
associated with her father, has
carried on the. business.
Resisting a trend which sees
more and more. smaller towns
denied the services of a qualified
pharmacist, Keating' s Phar-
macy has continued a regular
program of modernization to en-
sure that the Seaforth commun-
ity will receive the very best
and most up to date service.
With this in mind, earlier this
year the interior of the large.
store was completely renovated
with new installations designed
to rgake possible improved ser-
vice — a tradition of service and
quality first established by Rob-
ert Lumsden more than a cen-
tury ago.

In the March 11, 1870 issue,
The Expositor informs readers
who like a variety of entertain-
ment "Essays, recitations and
dialogues of unusual brilliancy

next Tuesday night". Sounds
like fun.

Babies And
Carriages
Raise Wrath
Follaing a report of a run-
away babycarriage which car-
reened down Seaford.' streets
almost injuring the baby inside.
The Expositor prints this letter
to the editor'.
"Sir; The baby carriage nuis-
ance has assumed the form of
an epidemic in this town of late.
It is utterly impossible to take a
dozen steps without coming into
contact with one of these now
considered to be indispensable
appendage to the household...
It would be desirable if Council
would levy a special rate on the
owners of these carriages, a s
without doubt one of •them would
contribute more to the wear and
tear of the sidewalks in a week, •
than a small army of men
would in a month", •
The letter is signed "A
Bachelor".
•
Where is the
Ear Room?
This story needs no introduct-
ion. • •
"On Friday night last, a
farmer from the Township of
Ackersmith had been spreading
himself rather too freely around
the hotels in town. In the even-
ing he retired„to rest in Knox's
Hotel , and, during the night
waking up and feeling a little
dry, took it into his head t o
repair to the bar -room to wet
his parched whistle. Instead of
"-going down stairs, he missed his
way, opened an outside door on
the second story, facing Main
Street, and unprotected by a
railing. He stepped out .of this
door down onto ,the sidewalk, a
distance of about sixteen feet.
He must have landed on the side-
walk on his feet, for he came
'upon the planks with such force
as to snap them in two, thus
breaking his fall, and no doubt
preventing serious injury. Sorne
of the inmates of the house were
awakened by the noiseof the
planks breaking, and upon gding
down stairs saw the man stand-
ing on the side walk a short dist-
ance from where he had gone
through the planks. He was
apparently uninjured, and his
first interrogation was ' where is
the bar -room?'.
