Safety League Stresses
Prevention of Accidents
Like the automobile on the
highway, the tractor on the
farm is a potential killer, if mis-
used.
Each year in Canada, more
than 100 tractor fatalities occur.
In fact, the tractor -kills or
maims more rural residents than
all other farm equipment com-
bined.
During the annual Observance
of Farm Safety Week, from
July 21 to 27, the National Safe-
ty League of Canada • is placing
special., emphasis on, the preven-
tion of accidents with tractors.
A special program to help re-
duce the number of accidents
is recommended by Gay Mc-
Laren, NSL general manager:
1. Provision of tractor educa-
tion which stresses the causes
of accidents • and rules of cafe
operation;
2. Installation of protective
frames or crush -resistant cabs
to guard the 'operator;
3. Mounting of Slow Moving
Vehicle (SMV) Emblems ,when
moving equipment on the roads.
About 60 per cent of tractor
fatalities involve upsets and 33

per cent of them occur on the
highway. More than 25 per cent
of. the fatalities involve young
people under the age 9f 2,0.
There is considerable evi-
dence that protective frames
and crush -resistant cabs sharp-
ly reduce the severity of injuries
to operators in tractor upsets.
NSL strongly urges their use
and pints out that such equip-
ment is now available optionally
on many new tractors and can
be adapted for older models.
As Mr. McLaren says: "It
takes less than two seconds for
a tractor to upset and the
chances of a man jumping to
safety are pretty remote."
On roads, the majority.of ac-
cidents result from other' vehi-
cles running into the rear of
tractors. Thus, NSL stresses the
need for the SMV Emblem on
the rear of farm equipment and
adequate lighting after dusk.
Mr. McLaren also suggests.
other rules for safer tractor op-
eration:
-Do not allow riders on the
tractor or other equipment.
Keep children away, along with
others not working.
-Attach implements -to the
drawbar, not the axle housing
or other parts of the rear of
the tractor.

Tragic Farm Loss
Can Be Reduced
There are more than 100,000
people in the farm population
of Canada involved in accidents
each year - and of these, about
30,000. receive permanent in-
juries and more than 2,200 lose
their lives.
This tragic loss could readily
be reduced, says Norman IL
Bell, President of the National
Safety League of Canada and
general chairman of the Cana-
dian Highway Safety Council,
which are co -sponsoring the an-
nual observance of Farm Safety
„Week, July 21-27.
Mr. Bell calls on all persons
and groups serving • or allied
with agriculture to intensify ef-
forts to curtail farm accidents,
emphasizing the fact that farm
safety is a family affair invol-
ving everyday hazards in living,
working and playing.
' •
"In industry," he says, "there
are safety engineers. On the
4.4•
farm, the entire family must
work together to eliminate 114-
ards and forestall careless acts."
He recommends that every
farm family take advantage of
Farm Safety Week to work out
a safety plan for the farm -
the home, buildings, fields, ma-
chinery, chemicals and all oth-
er aspects ,of .farm life.
"Make the plan work and
reap happiness and satisfac-
tion," he advises.

Harvest the Rewards
in Profit, Production
and Protection . • •
The success of today's highly mechanized farm
depends to an ever-increasing degree on the safety
practiced by today's modern farmer. When safety
is your constant companion, you run a more efficient
and productive farm.
• As a modern farme-r, you put heavy dependence
on the proper operation of costly, often specialized
equipment. Be sure it is safe to use, . . keep all ma-
chinery in tip-top shape.
Accidents are fewer when your farm area and
buildings are neat, clean and in good repair. And
even your youngest, farmers -to -be- should practice
safety. The best way for them to learn is by follow-
ing your good example.
Safety is a full time job'. Practice itallyear around
and you'll never stop harvesting the benefits.;
