Fire Destroys Area Barns
Only portions of the brick Valls remain after fire destroyed the barn of Seaforth resident,
Joe White, in Stephen Township. Lost in the $20,000 fire which was partially covered by in-
surance, was a considerable quantity of hay as well .as many farm implements. It was mie of
two area barn fires last week. (Exeter Times -Advocate Photo).
Fires Destroy Two Barns,
Damage
Estimate $25,000
Fires in the district destroy-
ed two barns last week with tot-
al damage amounting to mere
than $25,000.
Joseph White was summoned
from his home in Seaforth when
his barn in Stephen Township
was swept with fire and result-
ed in the greatest loss of the
two fires - a total of $20,000.
ofThe barn contained 400 bales
of fresh hay, a manure spread.
er, wagon and flat rack, grain
auger, weigh scales, rott pul-
per and lumber. All were des-
troyed in the blaze. Mr. White
said the loss was .partially in-
sured.
Mr. White resides in Seaforth
and commutes to the farm reg-
ularly to help his son Thomas
who wes away" at the thne of
the blaze. Neighbors informed
Mr. White of the fire and then
assisted firemen in saving a
pigpen, corn crik- wagon and
other farm equipment near the
75' x 40' frame building with a.
brick foundation.
One volunteer received slight
burns in fighting the fire.
The fire on the farm which
has been in 'the family for
more than 100 years, was as-
sumed to heve started from com-
bustion according to Mr. White.
He has not decided on illans to
rebuild as yet.
In the other fire, Wayne Mc-
Bride of Kippen suffered an es-
timated $5,000 loss when fire of
undeterntined 'origin destroyed
1,000 bales of old hay along
with ,a tractor and scuffler.
The barn was full insured.
Mr. McBride, who bought the
farm from Bill Kyle of Kippen
almost two years ago, was pick-
ing mustard In a field to the
east of the barn at the time of
the fire. He said he noticed the
blaze but not until it was too
late to do anything. Hensall
firemen battled the blaze but ,
were unable to save the barn.
He said hydro was not instal-
led in the building and no one
was seen around for hours be-
fore the fire.
He expects to rebuild in the
near future.
