W. Haysom your telephone manager As our new long distance rate reductions went into effect last week, I thought I might use my column this month to explain the various time bands and rates. The reductions, are part of our continuing program to provide you with the best possible service at the lowest possible cost: These new- est long distance reductions are based on the principle of "The later the hour, the better the bargain." And, for Bell Canada customers making calls between any two points in our Ontario, Quebec, Labrador and Northwest Territories ser- ving area there are real bargains. Beginning every evening at 6 p.m., in time bands of two hours, rates begin to go down for station -to -station calls. Further reductions are effective at 8 p.m., 10 p.m. and mid- night. In fact, our new "Afer 10" rate for a 10 -minute call between any two points in our serving area is generally low- er than any calling Ate in the world. Our "After Midnight" rate is a real boon for night owls . .. providing the friends that are called are night owls too! If you can make your calls at times when lines have spare capacity, you will bene- fit from these bargain rates. From time to dine in the past I've reminded you about our Family Calling Time Plan which allows you 10 minutes of conversation for the price of five, 12 minutes for the price of six, and so on. The new low rates apply to this Plan which now takeseffect at 10 p.m. instead of 8 p.m., Monday through" Saturday, and, of course, all daySunday. The chart below explains the times when the 'new long distance bargain rates are effectiVe. Just remember that all rates are quoted for the initial three minutes of a call. Ever since this girl was born her mother has taken her to all the different fimetions where children shouldn't go, such as showers, bingos and bowling from nine to 1130 at night. She is three years behind in school and not a wellbehaved child by any means. I have argued against her tak- ing her daughter along but she says the boys, who are Older, are alwaysteasing her if the mother is not there. If we definitely say don't bcring her along, she will say, "Then I won't come either." Dismayed DEAR DISMAYED when small girls or boys are required to mix chiefly with grownups and stay up late, they carry a heavy load. Their view of the world becomes distorted; their personalities strained, health threatened. If the boys can't be taught to care about their sister, another solution should be founet. Per- haps if the mother realized her action was posing a threat to her girl's developing personality she would have 8011581 second thoughts. DEAR DORIS —, Ever since ray husband died last year life has seemed completely pointless The evenings are long and emp- ty. The married couples we used to go with forget to include me. One needs a companion for any social life. How can I find something in my life that is missing now? I do things with my chnich group of women, but that isn't satisfying enough. I feel that I need the interest of some male. Is one doomed to a man -less life, in my circum- stance? Solitary Confinement DEAR SOLITARY — Take a hand in your own rescue. Throw a party for your 'friends, couples and singles, and worry not a whit about paring off. ' Make the next club you jain, a mixed one. Learn, the meaning of the word "sublimate". Havng a male companion isn't the only way to get some werthwhileness into life. • At 51 you have much to give: Start giving it. DEAR DORIS — In. the case of an adoption, can the natural mother claim the child if she should .change her mind? Childless DEAR CHILDLESS — Not if the child is a crown ward; that is if it is a case of neglect and the court' has made him a ward of the child care authority._ If it is an unwed mother who has signed the papers giving her eonsent to adoption, she has a limited time (in some provin- ces 21 ;days) in which to change her mind. She can't. back out after that. Confidential to Foster Sister — After the mass for a newly ordained priest, you may have a graciouis reception in the church parlor. A family dinner later would be informal and without a reception line. It is not a noisy high time. A young man has offered his life to the service of God. The occasion is marked with due dignity. DEAR DORIS — (1) What is the name of the booklet about where one can send their writings and„ how much .to charge? (2) When a couple moves, into a house, is it up to them to have a housewarming or is -it supposed to be a surprise affair Mit on by friends? Enjoying You DEAR ENJOYING — I enjoy you to. tFef (1) The writer's Guide is turn- ed out by the Canadian Author's Association. Send tw& dollars for it to their address; York- ville Public Library, 22 York- ville Avenue, Toronto 5, Ontar- io. (2) It may, be either; or it may turn out to be two parties: one of each.. • A racial problem DEAR DORIS — We are Chinese; I was brought up in Canada. I'm not even allowed to be seen talking with white boys. But the,re aren't any Chinese boys my age in this place. I've taken to sate, aking around NADIAN NATIONAL One tv,.. stye AR'RIP Whi Pe $4.40 Pare 40.6S _ behind my parents' backs. This boy I'm seeing has a lot of re- spect for me &nd wants to speak to tow parents ,ahout this. If they Weren't prejudiced, I'm sure they would think a lot of him. A Chinese by in this com- munity married) a white girl and his family disowned Mani Desperate DEAR DESPERATE — It's a rockey road ,between Ate raCes, and -no .utistake. You want male companionship like the other girls. Who wouldn't? look for help from an older Chinese who was born hi Can- ada and has a broader point of view- Many times right in Eng„ Iish Canadiap' 'families, an un- derstanding 'uncle or friend has been needed to smooth the way for. a rebellious teen-ager. Otherwise, there isn't much you can do until you are older and on your own. Sneaking out is no solution. DEAR DORIS-,— In one of your columns a lady suggested formation of a companion club. To make a beginning, may ; suggest that 'four persons may meet once a week, for a couple of hours between seven - and nime. p.m. at one of the mem- bers' houses in rotation, to play cards and exchange ideas. If this suggestion is aCcepted I shall be glOd to invite., the other three members to start the club going.. I am from In- dia. After retiring, I came alone to -visit my children in England, the States and Can - oda. • Army Major DEAR' , MAJOR — That's sporting enough. Let's hope your idea will start something with other retired Canadians in other small towns. One such group grew from one bridge, table to six, then divided. into two regular clubs. And all of them get together for a special celebration from time to time. Nice way to pick yourself up by your own boot straps - DEAR DORIS — I'm thank- ful to you for helping me once more. (I'm certain you will.) Is it proper for a boy (16), to spank a girl (15)?My boy friend spanks me for fun all the time. I don't mind at all but my frinds say I shouldn't let him. 1 don't see why I shouldn't. He spanked me at my birthday party and they thought it was 'okay. My mother and father spank me and it's okay. The teacher spanked rne last year and it was OX. Why isn't it OK for my boy friend to spank me? Sweet Fifteen DEAR .FIFTEEN — Spank- ing is for children. A girl with a boy friend is supposed to be growing up. No boy should have the authority' over your body to spank it. Just because you get a thrill out of ,being rnanhandled is no reason f o r perthitting, it. The Custom of birthday spanks is something else again. Confidential to Grieving — You are still in a state of shock after -your wife's death, and should be accepting your brother's offer of „companion- ship. He can do you good. . During a period) like this a person needs to be able to roll with the punches. This means that if you can be ,61 little less of the stoic and a little more of the person who is'willing to grieve and be comforted, you will hasten your recovery. DEAR DORIS — To whom does one write when he wishes to donate his body, upon death, to a medical school, science, etc. — or does it go by individ. ual organs, like eye banks, etc.? Not Dead Yet . DEAR NOT DEAD — He writes to the medical school of his choice'and tells his nearest and dearest he has done so. Each school has its own spe- cial needs and routines.
