The, neXt Ontario Provincial
t' ace Collatable you meet may
t1:143 tracking a romantic schem-
er,
"What's this?" you say. As
4ar as you're concerned OPP
Officers are cursed individuals
'Who possess awesome power.
Ast try to get from one plaee
to another in a hurry; they are
seemingly always popping -up
Isomewhere along the highway.
1 As the officer, pen and tick-
et pad in hand, prepares to is-
sue a speeding ticket, you
;swear they are "out to get me,
'Vohn Citizen". For the average
icitizen his opinion of the OPP
iends right there.
But, chasing romantic schem-
T,ers is just one minor task of
ithe force whose province -wide
,fight against crime is one of the
;largest in Canada.
4 You never think, as you see
an OPP cruiser, the man in that
ear keeping law and order on
ithe highways, hasbuddies re-
'coverhig stolen cars, solving
4counterfeit cases, protecting
/water rights, recapturing es-
capees, etc. In other words, they
%do just about everything to-,
lwards keeping crime rates down
cto a minimum.
They, are for your protection
and service and are not "out
to get you".
y That man in the cruiser is
part of just one branch — the
'2Highway Patrol, which •the lay -
'man respects so much — of
such branches as Anti -Rackets,

The Highway Patrol of the
OPP maintains a fleet of over
1,000 (that's probably why you
see so many) radio -equipped mo-
bile units and is responsible for
traffic law-enforcement and
highway safety.
The Anti -Rackets Branch in-
vestigates organized rackets and
business frauds such as finan-
cial swindles, romantic schem-
ers, door -to door cheats, and
others so common to everyday
life.
The Water Patrol takes care
of small boating regulations on
the inland waterways of Ontario.
Equipped with standard Police
FM radio and ship -to -shore
radio, they conduct safety pa-
trols, search and recue opera-
tions and answer thousands of
emergency calls annually.
Traffic Safety is a unit which
employs 150 members of the
OPP solely for the purpose of
promoting traffic safety educa-
tion in elementary and secon-
dary schools within the jurisdic-
tion of the Force.

The Central Records and
Communications Branch of the
OPP provides a 24 hour, 7 -day
week service to all police de-
partments on such matters as
criminal identification, stolen
motor vehicles, laundry and dry
cleaning identification. Over 50

also available to attend scenes
of crime anywhere in the prov-
ince.
Canine Unit, better known as
the doggie brigade, consists of
well-trained dogs for the pur-
pose of search and rescue.
Over 100 OPP motorcycles
make up the Motorcycle Patrol
and the maneuverability of
these machines gives easy ac-
cess ,through congested traffic
in emergency situations.
The air patrol has become a
valuable asset to the force in
search and rescue as well as the
detection of crime on the high-
way and other areas.
The Anti -Gambling Branch
protects Ontario residents from
the loss of millions of dollars
annually from gambling.
Another branch of the force
which has become highly re-
garded consists of scuba divers.
Their underwater investigations
have solved murders, thefts and
missing persons reports.
What the OPP has done is to
leave no area go neglected in
their efforts to make Ontario a
safe place to live.
The next time you meet a
cruiser — you now know.
