DEAR: DORIS
advice from
Doris Clark
I LOVE HIM, BUT . . .
DEAR DORIS — I had been
going out with a man for five
years. We had planned to mar-
ry in the summer.
About two months ago he
met a woman, and started to
see her regularly. Then he told
me he loved her. During this
time I had still been going out:
with him but he did nothing
but talk about her.
So I stopped seeing him. I
love this man very much, Dor-
is, and still want to marry him.
Can a man who said he loves
you suddenly stop and not feel
anything after five years?
The stupid thing about this
whole mess is that while she is,
away in England he phones me
evenings just to talk and acts •

Puzzler(
, •
DEAR- PUZZLED — It sounds
as if this one can. You'd bet-
ter suddenly stop even taking
his telephone calls.
If by any chance this infa-
tuation is temporary, he will
have to be the one to sign off
on it before reopening negotia-
tions with you — preferablY
with a sincere apology.
. DEAR DORIS — You men-
tioned social work as a career.
My plans for the future are
undecided, but I have consider-
ed this field.
What exactly does a social
worker do; what kind of train-
ing is needed; and where does
one train?
Wanting to Know
•
DEAR WANTING — Pretty
hard to put it in n small nut-
shell.
A graduate social worker is
used in a great many spots;
Child care, marriage counsel-
ling, medical social service, Big
Brother work social plannins,
church and school guidlnce,
public welfare, rehabilitation,
industrial social . work — you
name it.
If it deals with people and
human problems, there is like-
ly to be a spot for a social
worker; he or She knows some-
thing about what makes people
tick; and how to straighten
them out when life piles up too
much grief.
Write to The Guidance Cen-
tre, 371 Bloor Street West,
Toronto, for a fin.e monograph
on, the occupation of social
worker, enclosing 15 cents.
DEAR DORIS — I have an
illegitimate son, which he
doesn't know, and I don't want
to tell him now. His father died
before he was „born. I register-
ed him in my single name at
that time, but I married a few
years later.
My son plans to get married
now. Must he give his father's
name in the marriage license
or can he give my husband's
name?
Worried
DEAR WORRIED — If he is
under 21, you may be able to
arrange for legal adoption now,
without his knowledge. Adop-
tion ofa minor .onlY requires
consent of the parents.
If he is over 21, I'd suggest
you level with him, and still
arrange adoption: especially if
he has been going by your
husband's name all these years.
Your local or regional' child
care authority is your 'sourceof
help here.
