THE SCHOOL — 1954-1961
Xs \
THE SCHOOL — 1939-1954
THE SCHOOL — 1887-1939
The original por-
tion of the Seaforth
Collegiate Institute
building was erect-
ed in 1879 upon the
establishment of a
high school here.
The two rooms that'
were provided at
that time proved,
within a few years,
to be inadequate to
aecommodate the in-
creasing numbers of
students, and in
1887 the Board de-
termined on a poli-
cy of expansion,.
An interesting co-
incidence is that
Mr. L Edge, who
was general contrac-
tor for the 1938 ad-
dition, was employ-
ed on the job in
1887. In 1934 Mr.
Edge presented the
plans of the former
work to the S.C.I.
Alumni Association,
who had them fram-
ed and hung in the
school.
In 1954 an exten-
sive addition to pro-
vide a gymnasium
and auditorium was
completed. The
space thus released
in the main buil&
ing made possible
the provision of
three additional
classrooms.
Another addition,
construction of
which began in
1960, came into use
in February of 1961.
It included five
classrooms, new ad-
ministrative accom-
modation and a caf-
eteria. (Drawings are
the work of George
Daly, a graduate of
Seaforth Collegiate
Institute, now of
Toronto).
The latest addi-
tion, which began in
1967 included new
classrooms, a lib-
rary and new ad-
ministrative facili-
ties.
The original Sea -
forth Collegiate In-
stitute was torn
down to give Sea -
forth ,and area a
completely new and
mode rn school,

with any in the dis-
trict.
Scholarships Play an Important
Roll at SDHS Throughout thelrear
(Scholarship has always play-
ed an important part in the
thinking of those associated with
Seaforth District High School.
James R. Scott, in a review of
the school written in 1954, dis-
cusses this aspect of education
In the Seaforth‘area.)
When scholarship is, lig it
were, in the air, people's stand-
ards of values change and some
of them will act to promote and
encourage even greater attain-
ment.
A case in point here is that
of the late James Irving Carter,
who lived a nurnber of years in
Seaforth and is buried in the
Maitlanclbank cemetery. Carter
had only an elementary school
education himself and he had a
somewhat checkerd career be-
fore he gained his eventual busi-
ness success. He started in Sea-
• forth and, after several setbacks
had his first success here. Later
he moved to Sarnia and in his
last years began helping stud-
ents who had difficulty getting
enough money to go to college.
As .his interest grew he extend-
ed his aid to other students in
the counties of Huron, Perth
and Middlesex. When he died
he left $100,000 for scholar-
ships to be offered in twenty-
five counties of the province.
Over the years, Seaforth has
won more than its share of
these awards which came from
a man who got his start in this
town.
At a later date, the scholar-
ship fever was again felt in
this district. When the Aluriml
Association of the school was
reorganized in 1931, one of its
Initial steps was t seek to es-
tablish a scholarship fund in
order that an award could be
made annually to. a student of
the senior year. The Alumni
Memorial Scholarship was first
awarded in 1934 and It has
been in existence ever since.
Most recently the school re-
deived a bequest which places
it in a unique position among
the secondary schools of the
province. On his death in 1951,
an alumnus of the school,
Bruce Scott, left the major por-
tion of his estate to provide
scholarships of $500 value for
worthy students graduating
from Seaforth. The first of
these scholarships must, go
each year tt) a prospective
student of University College,
University of Toronto, the re-
mainder may be won by stu4.
ents planning to go to any ac-
credited Canadian University.
This puts Seaforth in a' posi-
tion usually found only in the
viealthy private schools of the
country.
As a result of the keen inter -
,est in academic attainment gen-
erated in this community and
the generous provision for
scholarships made by its vari-
ous citizens, the school now
finds itself able to offer more
Incentives to prospective uni-
versity students ,than any other
secondary school in Ontario.
The students of no other col-
legiate or high school in the
province have as good a chance
of obtaining assistance
their university work as
the pupils of the Seaforth
, trict High School today.
