Of • all thee 6hi1"•ish nonsense to
emanate froth a •.dy of otherwise
reasonable men, the .etition of the Com-
mercial Travellers' .: ssooiation to the
Government re Locs Option, as report-
ed in the Wingham dvanoe last week,
bangs Banagher. T. a petition is said to
be, that after a Lo..1 Option ByLaw
has been carried by the required three-
fifths majority, the Government shall
make enquiries, anif proper accom-
modation for the travelling enblic
(which means prin ipally Commercial
Travellers) will nobe provided, that
the Government a ther provide such
accommodation, or else disregard the
expressed will of t e majority of the
people and grant lienees to those hotels
that will. Talk abo t elate legislation.
We had been tanghfondly to believe
the object of legislat•.n to be the great-
est gool to the gr• . est num/ er,
and the Governme . of this country
to be by a •• a' . 'ty of its voters.
But here is a .. dy of men forming an
infinitesimal fraotio of the population
demandingthat th
expressed will of
the
majority, even whothat majority con-
sists of three-fifthof a polled vo
te,
shall be set on one aide so that they can
get a better dtnner1and a more comfort-
able bed. We do! not want our boys
destroyed by whiskey, but we are to be
compelled, agai At! our wills, to have
open, public places; of temptation where
"men of principle" (save the mark!)
will sell them all they want so as to en-
able some Commeeclal Travellers to feed
a little more daintily, and Bleep a little
more softly than ,!they might otherwise
do. One thing is certain Commercial
Travellers' Association and those who
suppott them in this demand still have
their nerve with them. No fear of ner-
vous proatration for them.
e.
Then we are told the liquor licenses
are in the hands of "men of principle" iu
Wingham. A prominent business man
who has a store bra Josephine street pub-
licly stated not' long ago that he was
entering a Win*ham hotel with a Com-
mercial Traveller, in the hall a woman
was talking wil;h the proprietor. The
tears were runn ng down her face as she
pleaded with h m not to sell any me:e
liquor to her y. The human fiend,
who we are ass red is a "man of prin-
ciple" laughed Cin her face, and said,
"I'll Bell him al the liquor he wants as
long as he hoe (ve cents to pay for it."
God save tbie to n atom any .more suoh
"men of prineip
o."
*
If all the h elkeepers are "men of
principle," wli is there any need d lin
"Indian List" for any "Hingham reel.
