board has approved the by-law of this
town for the issue of debentures amount•
ing to $1800 for the extensions made to
the waterworks

modern shipping history was made last
week when 1,327 oases were brought
from England to New York.

- We are pleased to report that Dr.
Bethune, who recently injured his knee
is able to be around again. The Dr's.

almost fully recovered.

two pioneer residents of Bruce Tp.,
being Mr, James Wilkie, aged ,75 years,
and Mrs. Robs. White, aged 91 years.
Both had resided'near Underwood.
-The engagement is announced of
Miss Marguerite Mabel Jameson, daugh-
ter of Mr. R. E. Jameson of Oakville, to
Mr. J. E. Davis of Boston, Mass.,
formerly of Wingham, Ont. The mar-
riage to take place in December, •
-Mr. Robert Sterling, formerly of
Belgrave, writing from Melita, Man.,
renewing his subscription to the Times,
says he had very good crops and in his
district they were not bothered with
either frost or hail. Mr. Sterling had
5,000.bushefs of wheat and 3,200 bushels
of oats,
-Mr. A, E. Morrison, of Sarnia, an
officer connected with the Provincial
License Department, is making a tour of
the hotels in the license district of South
Heron, accompanied by Inspector Tor-
rance As soon as he is through, he wi-1
perform tue same office in West Huron,
under direction of Inspector Asquith.
-The many friends of Mr. P. S.
Linklater are pleased to learn that he is
recovering and we hope to soon see him
able to be attending to business.
-The many friends of Mr. Jae. Brook
will be sorry to learn that ho was strick-
en with paralysis last week and has
since been in a very critical condition.
•--Messrs A, Nicol, F. J. Hill and
.A. Friend have this week contributed
$5 00 to go towards the repairs at tho
conservatory at the Wingham Hospital.
-Mrs. Kenneth Corbett, aged 85 years,
a pioneer of Kincardine Tp., died in
Detroit and the remains were interred
in Kincardine cemetery on Friday last.
-Mr. W. J. McGregor, of the Luck.

A Virginia man says his hen houses
are cleaned three dines a week and
fumigated once a week. The hens have
dost boxes and plenty of litter to soratoh
in, while grit, bone, charcoal, and fresh
water are constantly on hand. Their
quarters are dry and well ventilated,
and there is no epidemic.

On Tuesday morning the C. P. R. in-
augurated the new direct passenger
service between Toronto and Ottawa,
and the first train in connection with the
service was wrecked in the yards at
Smith's Falls. Wm. H. Tyson, 0. P.R.
brakeman, had a rib broken, while three
other men had narrow escapes.
The beat way to manage a kioking
cow, says the Breeders' Gazette, is to
fasten her by the head, then put ,a
rope on her hind leg below the hook.

WEST WASVANOaH.
Hugh McMath, one of the pioneers of
West Wawanosh died at the home of
his daughter in Detroit, where he had
been residing for some years, and the
remains Were brought to Goderich for
interment. Mr. MCMath was born in
County Down, Ireland, and Dame to this
country with his parents and their family
in 1832, settling on Amherst Island, near
Kingston, He was married to Miss M,
Scott, and after living there for about 13
years he moved with his wife, shortly
After their marriage, to the Township
of West Wawanosh, near Dun,;anhon,
of which he has been a resident • ever
since until going to live with hie dangh•
ter in Detroit. He woe a veteran militia
man, was engaged in the Mo'l~`enzie
rebellion in 37 and in the Fenian raid,
and was the first sergeant in No 9 Com,
pang of the 38:d Huron regiment When
it was formed at Dungannon. To him
