Tips
blocks for your name.
Q. What shall 1 do if my
address has changed since
last year?
A. If your name or address
is now different, be _sure to
make the necessary changes
and do this in the "correc-
tion" area immediately be-
low the label. Also be sure
it is the '.labelled return that
you send to the Data Centre.
If your address has changed
since filing and you have
claimed a refund on your
tax return, writ'- to your dis-
trict taxation office informing
them of the change. Many re-
fund chequrs are delayed
each yePr as a result of tax-
payerschansting their ad-
dress after filing.
Q. Must I have la,Soeial In-
surance Number?
A. Yes, if you are reguired
to file an income tax return
you are required by law to
have a social insurance mut-
ber. Also it 's imnortant that
the information filed on your
scial insurance number ap-
plication is correct, as your
Canada PPnsion Plan records
will be based on this infor-
mation.
Q. I was sick just before
Christmas and the doctor's
bill is, dated December 10,
1967. I didn't pay the bill
until January 5, 1967: -Can I
include this on my medical
expense claim on my' 1967
return.
A. This depends on who
paid the doctor's bill. Ordin-
arily, if you paid it yourself,
you cannot include it in a,
medical expense claim for
1967 because you did not pay
it before the end of the year.
However, if it was paid
through a medical insurance
plan, a special provision in
the. Income Tax Act allows
you to include it in a claim
for 1967 because you incur-
red the expe-se in that year.
Q. My son attended univer-
sity this year and I paid his
tuition fees _of $600.00. Can I
dednot this from my income?
A. No. Tttition fees are de-
ductible from the income of
the student himself, regard-
less who paid them or where
the money came from. How-
ever, if they were paid by
his employer, the student
may make a dedu-ction only
if the employer has reported
them on the student's T4.
Q. If my wife and I are
both workine, can one of us
claim medical' expenses and
charitable donations made in
the name of „the other? We
have no .dependants.,
A. .Yes. You may arrange
-between you to claim your
allowable donations and me-
dical expenSes to your best
advantage. If one claims all
the donations and medical ex-
penses the other is entitled to
the standard deduction.
