THURSDAY. Nov. 28. 1007.
NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Wednesday of last we k was Sir
Wilfrid Laurier's 66th birthday. Sir
Wilfrid is in the best of health and
spirits and celebrated tate day busily at
work in hie ofb,^.e at Ottawa. Canadians
generally will with Canada's Premier
many happy returns of the day.
There was a net decrease in the num-
ber of homestead eutties made in Sep•
tember, 1007, compared with September,
1%06 Of 200 of a total of Ott made in
September, 1907, by persons coming
from the United States, there were 174
from North Dakota, 116 from Minnesota,
30 from Kansas. 33 from South Dakota,
30, each, from Washington and Wyom-
ing, 29 from Michigan and 25 from
Illinois.
The total amount of the premiums
paid for fire insurance to the stock com-
panies doing business in 1906 in Canada
was $14,687,965. The retnans of mutual
eompauies are not gtvea in the report of
the Superintendent ot Insurance, but
may be fairly estimated at about half as
much more, making the grass total
paid out during the year in Canada a4
about twenty-two million dellaee. The
total amount paid out to Life I &manes
Companies, both mutual sad steak cam-
panies, in 1906 was $22,3tw,4 et. Tile
annual cost of fire and life icsaratee
may therefore be taken to he nearly
equal.
The names of M. G Cameran, M. P.
P., Wm. Proudfoot and J. T. Carrie,
Warden of the County are menti; awed in
oanuectiOn with the nomination for the
Legislature for West Heron. We will
not venture a guess as to who will be
the man. Mr. Cameron has been the
repreeentative for some years, and we
understand bas expressed himself as
wishing to retire at the end of the term
of the present parliament. Messrs
Carrie and Proudfoot are both good men
and would represent the riding with
credit to the people of West Huron, and
should either of them receive thenomin-
ation we believe West Heron can be
kept in the Liberal column.
The annonncemeat came from
Ottawa on Friday ]act that Arch.
Campbell, M P., for Centre York; N.
A Belmont, M. P., far Ottawa, and
D, Derbyshire, ex -M. P. for Brockville
bad been appointed to the Senate to ;ell
the Ontario vanoanoiea. The TIMES has,
and ie still of the opinion, that the
Senate should be abolished. There is
no good reaeon why it should exist. If
not abolished, why not have it reduced
in numbers and let the members thereof
be elected by the people in the same
manner as for the Commons. Each
member could represent a 'larger elec-
toriai district. We do not approve of
the appointing men who are already
members of Parliament. thus leaving
vacancies, causing bye-electiene, which
cost money. The Senate ie a large bill
of expenso which the people of Canada
Mild very well afford to cut ont.
ing $90,000.000. At the end of the Con.
servative administration they were
$02,000.000 deeper ia debt than whet)
they started, andafter eleven year& of
Liberal tole there is no appreciable
addition to the public debt, but a very
substantial anrplue, greater in automat
than the Oonservativee expended on.

of this year's taxes, There is aver
$16,000 to collect.
The Cole Drain, which starts on
lot 7, North half, con. 7 and empties
into the river Maitland on the Arm-
strong farm, 6th line, and ',shone
length is 0,370 yards, has bion let at
22 cents a yard, to Messrs. McQuade

The Conservatives often claim that
while in office they expended. =Ore in
pnblie works than the Liberals in the
same length of time. Let ns examine
the figures. For the eleven years pre-
vious to 1896,, when they went out of
office, the Conservatives spent $80,000-
000 on capital account, and to their
everlasting discredit be it known, that
they borrowed $62,000,000 of this, that
is, they went in debt for public improve -
meats. During the plat eleven years
the Liberals have spent $127 003,000 on
capital account, and instead of going into
debt have accuinnleted a surplus exceed -

Spree broke out around my mouth and I
was unable to eat. Icpnsulted a special-

and that he had little hopes for my re-

was useless to spend any more money on
doctors. One day my husband urged
me to try Dr. Williams' Pink P1lls.
After a few weeks use of the Polis I was
convinced Chet I had found the right
medicine. I took twelve boxes and they
completely oared me, and 1 am now in
excellent health. I gladly recommend
them to all sufferers, tor they cured nee

Live Stock Markets.
Toronto, Nov. 26th. -At the City
Cattle Market the run of stock to -day
was 53 cars, with 945 head of cattle,
1,560 sheep, 200 hogs and 131 oclves.
Trade was brisker at the City Cattle
Market to -day than it has been of
late, in part owing to a light run. The
demand was chiefly for good butcher
cattle, and for the right kind prices
were, if anything a little firmer, one
dealer giving it as his opinion that
there was a difference of ten to fif-
teen cents higher than last week. This
however, would be only on the best
butcher cattle. On the lower grades
prices were not quotably any higher
but there was a steadier tone to the
market generally, and everything was
cleaned out in good time.

NAVE STYLE, FIT AND SHAPE
IN YOUR CLQTHESNOT
LUST WEAR.
What is the secret of a great painting ? What gives it its power ?
It's the INTELLIGENT WORK that is in it.
Now, it's the same way in everything,
Take the Clothes, for instance, that have been improperly and
carelessly opt and tailored -that have been merely pressed into a tem-
porary, shape semblance by Old Doctor Goose, the Hot Flat Iron,
Those poorly made garments will " go to pieoes " a very short time
after they have been worn.
Whereas the Good Suit -that which has had INTELLIGENT wORIt
put into it -will hold its Style, Shape and Fit for a good ling time.
Now, how's one to tell the difference between the poor and the good?
Well, if you have worn any of Maxwell & Hill's Clothes, you
already know.
If yon have not, then try ns for a SUIT or OVERCOAT and yon
wiII very soon find ont.
Oar Clothes have the maximum amount of skilled and conscien-
tious tailoring pat into them to insure all-round excellence.
They say tunes are hard. Weil, our priees suit the times.
Now dot't wait, but Dalt and see us right away and avoid the Christmas
tush,
