How did it all start? Where did the custom originate? Well, the first valentine was sent many, many years ago, in the third century A. D. to be exact, and the sender was a young Roman named Valentinus. Valentinus, who was impris- oned by Emperor Claudius II for giving aid to Christian mar- tyrs, according to legend, be- friended the blind daughter of his jailer while waiting his ex- ecution and resto..red her sight. On the night before he died; Valentinus penned a farewell message to the girl who had meant so much to him and sign- ed it "from your Valentine". Valentinus was put to death on the 14th of February and was buried in what is today the Church of Praxedes in Rome. Near his grave a pink al- mond tree, a symbol of abiding love, is said to have blossomed. Thus the name of Valentinus has come down through. the centuries as the word which stands for affection among friends and love among sweet- hearts. Many adults will recall val- entine cards in an earlier per- iod where the sentiment was designed to hurt. Happily this type of card is a thing of the past and expressions of love and affection have taken over completely. The purpose of sending val- entine cards is to express warm feelings toward each other, in the spirit of the first valentine card sent by Valentinus, and Canadians will faithfully follow the custom this year, as they have done each year to bring warmth and good will into the lives of friends and sweet- hearts.
