advice from

A QUIET LOVE I
DEAR DORIS -- My husband
talks a lot' to everyone while
I really haven't much to say.
Is it neceSsary ,for a married
woman to speak to every male
of her acquaintance? Since I'm
makried I don't care whether I
do or not. I came bore as a
bride and while my husband
has known these people most
of his life, they were strangers
to me.
I get bored when he is so
longwinded. Maybe I'm jealous,
but I have spoken to people
who didn't reply. This really
gets me.'lly husband tells me I
shouldn't worry over it, but
I'm a sensitive person.
Ours has been a happy mar -
'liege for 20 years and I feel
guilty for getting upset about
such things.
t Worried And Upset
DEAR WORRIED AND UP-
SET -- Good manners mean at
least a gracious nod. ViThy not
speak? If you stare straight
ahead, folk may well think you
snobbish! Your talkative mate
may even be trying to be eXtra
friendly to make ,up for your
silence. '
Isn't it high tithe you began
sharing his interest in the
frienda of his childhood? You
could at least listen with a
friendly look on your face.
DEAR DORIS - My son is
20; does not 'seem to want to
work. He just goes to the news-
stand and reads funny books.
Sometimes he looks for work
but his friends have found him
jobs and he may only stick it
for a couple of weeks.
He has his own car and I
loaned him money for car in-
surance. That's all right, but
my problem is to glt him to
understand that he has to stand
on. his own two feet and start
supporting himself.
He has been in rouble with
the law twice for stealing cars.
The last time he went to jail
for a year and on probation till
last month. Mind- you, he -didn't
have a very, pleasant childhood.
I have been married twice and
my second husband and he
don't get along. My daughter
was my folks' pet and the boy
was always sat upon.
Wits' End
DEAR WITS' END - One
thing led to afoother. As a lad
he was blamed too much, loved
too little; punished but never
praised'., Now your kindnesses
are accepted as indulgences, and
his habit of not caring is in-
grained.
Talk with his probation offi-
cer, and start right now to
change things. Between yau
there's a chance for guidance
into work he can do and be
praised for; and the car should
be a -reward if and when he
does well. I'm writing to you
privately and more fully about
this.
DEAR DORIS - Once some
years ago you helped the with
a contest for e 4-H club meet
mg.
This time it is for a shower
in honor of a young friend.
Would you- have a suggestion
for entertainment? ,
Auntie Mame
DEAR AUNTIE--_ ?es: ' the
Bride's Scrap Book. Everybody
searches through old magazines
to find amusing' illustrations of:
(1) Jean as a baby; (2) Jahn as a
baby; (3) school days; (4) their
first date; (5) they're engaged!
(6) the wedding; (7) the honey-
,
rp:oon; (8),One year later; (9) 25
years later; (10) 50 years later.
..,Selecting, cutting out, past-
ing op, labelling, asseinbling
the 4ereP bnek - it's all fin,
The cover should be padded
and covered' with woven satin
ribbon. Or use your own imagi-
nation about captions and cov-
er decor.
,Confidential to Ugly, Duck-
ling - We can't all be raving
beauties, but. we can, dress up
the package as nicely as possi.r
ble. This means dresses well
pressed, hair clean and well
brushed, faces clean and not
too made-up looting.
Once you've done your best
with what you've got, forget it.
Talk. to the other fellow; put
him at ease. Let a lovely per-
sonality shine through.
